A Brief Overview
Using discretion and independent judgment, the Speech-Language Pathologist assumes the responsibility to provide a comprehensive evaluation of cognitive communication skills and/or swallowing function and provide goal oriented treatment to facilitate maximum communication and/or swallowing potential for Acute Care populations. This position requires initiative, action in assigned responsibility, and understanding of physical, mental, psychological and social needs of patient's understanding of communication skills, evaluation and treatment. A desire to work in collaboration with associates to provide quality interdisciplinary patient programming is required.
Education Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved program satisfying the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's academic practicum requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence. Required
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to write reports, respond to common inquires or complaints from customers, regulator, or members of the business community and emails. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions for groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public. (Required proficiency)
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and basic algebra and geometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. (Required proficiency)
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. (Required proficiency)
- Skills with utilizing database software, E-mail, word-processing and/or EPIC. (Required proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications
- Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) - ASHA May accept individuals in the process of completing their clinical fellowship year. Required
- Speech Language Pathologist License - KDADS Required
- Basic Life Support - BLS Required within 90 days of hire.
What you will do
- Use discretion and independent judgment, assuming the responsibility to provide a comprehensive evaluation of cognitive and/or communication skills, a comprehensive evaluation of swallowing function, and goal-oriented treatment to facilitate maximum communication and/or swallowing potential.
- Review Physician's referral and patient's condition and medical records to determine required treatment.
- Plan and prepare written treatment program based on evaluation of patient data. Evaluate effects of treatment at various stages and adjust treatments to achieve maximum benefit.
- Consult with other members of healthcare team to help plan and coordinate medical interventions.
- Record treatment response, and progress in patients chart or enter information into computer.
- Instruct patient and family in home program. Provide fieldwork education, student supervision, education and mentoring to students. Provide patient, family and staff education in techniques and objectives.
- Gather material and supplies for individual use and clean and return to appropriate areas at the end of the treatment sessions.
- Research participation as appropriate.
- Plan and conduct lectures and training programs on speech, language, and dysphagia and related topics for medical staff, students and community groups as assigned.
- Complete department and hospital competencies/education requirements as assigned.
- This position supervises Clinical Fellowship Year Candidates and those completing their graduate field work practicum.
