Job description

The Position

Arevon is recruiting for the position of Data Science Intern, Interconnection & Transmission, an outstanding opportunity for individuals seeking an exciting, high-growth work environment in one of the most important industries for the 21st century.

The Data Science Intern will support the Interconnection and Transmission teams by ensuring accurate collection, organization, and maintenance of critical data across multiple systems. This role will focus on collecting, compiling, and/or sourcing data/information from multiple sources, transforming it into useable database(s).

The role will also provide an opportunity to gain an understanding of how data can be used across various cutting-edge tools used in the electric generation and transmission industry.

Projects:

  • Map Eastern Interconnection (EI) and Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) Generation Interconnection Queues (GIQ) and transmission projects to raw source files.
  • Aggregate, map and process regional ISO/RTO queue filings, tracking project statuses (e.g., active, under study, withdrawn, operational) and Interconnection customer data.
  • Develop a change-set tracker to monitor changes in transmission object characteristics - Line Status, impedance, voltage  Magnitude, Bus Angle, etc.- between various study cases.

Assist in automating data extraction, web scraping, mapping, change-detection processes across all core interconnection projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Extract, update and validate electrical topology, system study cases and GIQ data.
  • Parse regional queue applications, commercial operation dates, capacity values, resource types (solar, wind, storage, thermal) to maintain a unified data pipeline.
  • Identify opportunities to automate data ingestion from grid operator portals (e.g., PJM, MISO, CAISO, SPP, ERCOT) and improve workflow efficiency. Maintain a systematic repository of data issues, study case mismatches, queue record discrepancies assisting in their resolution.

Maintain and query backend databases that feed key operational dashboards, interconnection cost models and transmission analytics.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, or other programming languages used for data analysis and automation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret and organize complex datasets.
  • Prefer general understanding of electric grid fundamentals, power systems, ISO/RTO interconnection processes or transmission planning concepts.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Excel and data management tools. Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with relational databases and data transformation techniques. Ability to collect, clean, validate, and organize data from multiple sources. Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework or experience in electric power systems, transmission planning, data standardization, automation, or energy markets.
  • Experience with data analysis libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with GIS, spatial data, or mapping tools.
  • Knowledge of power system modeling software such as PSSE/TARA, PROBE, or similar applications.
  • Understanding electric transmission networks or utility operations.
  • Experience with SQL databases and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.
  • Experience developing scripts or automating repetitive data processing tasks.
  • Familiarity with version control on large databases.
  • Experience creating dashboards or reports using Power BI, Tableau, or similar visualization tools.
  • Previous internship, research, or project experience in the energy, utility, or renewable energy industry.
