Distribution and Logistics Worker (Warehouse Worker), Basic Needs & Student Support

Job Summary:
The purpose of this position is to support the food security operations of the Department of Basic Needs & Student Support by safely transporting, selecting, loading, unloading, and delivering food and essential goods between community partners and CSUSB's Obershaw Den (San Bernardino) and The Den (Palm Desert Campus). The position ensures reliable, compliant, and efficient movement of inventory to maintain consistent access to basic needs resources for students.
Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate and execute the scheduled pickup, transportation, and delivery of food, hygiene products, and other essential resources between community partners-including Feeding America, FIND Food Bank, Stater Bros., local retailers, and donors-and CSUSB pantry and distribution locations.
  • Ensure deliveries are completed in a timely, safe, professional, and reliable manner while maintaining positive working relationships with community partners and campus stakeholders.
  • Perform the safe loading, sorting, securing, transportation, and unloading of donated and purchased food and essential items at designated pickup and campus distribution sites.
  • Inspect items for quality and usability, organize inventory within pantry storage areas, rotate stock as appropriate, and assist with monitoring and reporting inventory levels to support uninterrupted pantry operations.
  • Adhere to all applicable food handling, food safety, sanitation, hygiene, and storage standards during the receipt, transportation, handling, and distribution of food and essential goods.
  • Maintain the quality, safety, and integrity of transported items by following established departmental, public health, and university protocols and procedures.
  • Conduct and document required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure operational safety and compliance. Identify, document, and promptly report on vehicle maintenance, safety, or operational concerns to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles in clean, fueled, and service-ready condition in accordance with university transportation policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and timely transportation and operational records, including pickup and delivery logs, inventory documentation, mileage records, vehicle inspection reports, and related tracking information.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with Basic Needs staff, student employees, volunteers, and external community partners regarding scheduling, deliveries, inventory needs, and operational updates.
  • Perform other classification-related duties and special projects as assigned in support of Basic Needs and pantry operations.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • One year of experience assisting in the receipt, storage, or issuance of materials from a centralized stockroom or warehouse, including some experience in the operation of forklift trucks or similar power-operated materials handling equipment. Prospective applicants who do not have the experience listed may be considered eligible based on other evidence of meeting the above minimum qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
Working knowledge of methods, practices, and equipment used in receiving, storing, packing, and shipping materials and supplies. General knowledge of methods of taking inventories and maintaining inventory records.
- Ability to match names and numbers quickly and accurately;
- Keep simple records and make simple reports;
- Read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; make simple mathematical calculations;
- Operate powered materials handling equipment;
- Apply safe methods of moving heavy supplies and equipment;
- Perform manual labor.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience working in food distribution, warehouse operations, or community food bank settings.
• Experience with inventory handling or delivery operations.
• Familiarity with Feeding America or similar food recovery partners.
• Sufficient formal or informal education to read, write, and follow written and verbal instructions.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Possession of a valid California driver's license and ability to maintain insurability.
• Possession of a valid San Bernardino County Food Handler's Card (or ability to obtain prior to start).
Special Conditions:
  • Possess a valid California driver's license appropriate for each vehicle operated which may include two-axle single-motor and one towed vehicle (e.g., a trailer with a gross weight of 6,000 pounds or less) as required
  • May be required to life or carry over 50lbs

Compensation and Benefits:
The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.
Initial salary step placement will be Step 1 - $3,461 to Step 7- $3,898 per month for qualified candidates.
CSU Classification Salary Step Range: $3,461 - $4,752 per month (Step 1 - Step 17)
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.
Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Conditions of Employment
Background Check
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
Drivers License Check
Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
Physical Exam
Employment is contingent upon candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
Mandated Reporter
The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
