What is a State Tested Nursing Assistant?

A State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) is a healthcare professional who provides basic patient care under the supervision of registered nurses or licensed practical nurses. STNAs assist patients with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, and mobility. They also help monitor patients’ vital signs and report changes in health status to other medical staff. In Ohio, becoming an STNA requires completing a state-approved training program and passing a competency exam. This role is essential in long-term care facilities, hospitals, and home healthcare settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a State Tested Nursing Assistant?

To thrive as a State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA), you need a solid understanding of basic patient care, infection control, and safety procedures, typically achieved through completion of a state-approved training program and passing the state competency exam. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMRs), mobility aids, and vital sign monitoring equipment is essential. Compassion, strong communication, and teamwork skills help STNAs build trust with patients and collaborate effectively with healthcare staff. These capabilities are crucial for delivering quality patient care, ensuring safety, and supporting the broader healthcare team.

What are some common challenges faced by State Tested Nursing Assistants and how can they be managed effectively?

State Tested Nursing Assistants often encounter challenges such as managing a heavy workload, handling emotionally difficult situations, and maintaining clear communication with both patients and healthcare teams. Building strong time-management skills and seeking support from experienced colleagues can help manage these demands. Additionally, prioritizing self-care and utilizing available resources for stress management are essential for long-term success in this role. Teamwork and open communication with nurses and other healthcare staff also greatly enhance daily workflow and job satisfaction.
