Startup Software Developer Internship information

What is a startup software developer internship?

A Startup Software Developer Internship is a temporary position where interns work with a startup company to gain experience in software development. Interns typically assist with coding, debugging, testing, and sometimes designing software solutions under the guidance of experienced developers. Working in a startup environment often means exposure to a wide range of tasks and technologies, providing valuable hands-on learning. This type of internship is ideal for students or recent graduates looking to build their technical skills and learn how startups operate.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a startup software developer intern?

To thrive as a Startup Software Developer Intern, you need fundamental programming skills, familiarity with software development methodologies, and coursework or experience in computer science. Experience with version control systems like Git, and knowledge of popular frameworks or languages such as JavaScript, Python, or React, are typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, a collaborative mindset, and adaptability help interns excel in the dynamic and fast-paced startup environment. These skills and qualities are vital for quickly contributing to projects, learning on the job, and directly impacting the startup’s growth.

What unique challenges and learning opportunities can I expect as a startup software developer intern?

As a Startup Software Developer Intern, you'll likely work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment where you'll take on a variety of responsibilities, from coding new features to testing and deploying software. Startups often have smaller teams, so interns frequently collaborate directly with experienced developers, product managers, and even founders, giving you hands-on exposure to the full product lifecycle. You may encounter challenges such as shifting priorities, tight deadlines, and limited resources, but these situations offer valuable opportunities to develop problem-solving skills and adaptability. This role is ideal for those eager to learn quickly and make a tangible impact early in their careers.

Job description

Robotics Software Engineer | Experienced
Atlanta, GA - Full-Time - Onsite/Hybrid - 3-6 years experience
Greenzie's mission is to free humans from repetitive outdoor labor. We're starting with the hardest tasks first - highly repetitive outdoor work in the green industry: lawn maintenance, turf mowing, landscaping. We are hiring roboticists who want to develop software for production robots doing real work out in the field today. Join our Team.
As a Robotics Software Engineer you will:
  • Own a subsystem of our autonomous outdoor platform end to end - design, implementation, testing, and the bugs that surface in the field
  • Develop software for our autonomous outdoor robotics platform in C++ and Python using the Robot Operating System (ROS/ROS2)
  • Debug hard problems on real hardware in tough real-world conditions, where the sensor data is messy and the terrain is uneven
  • Maintain a high standard for the team through code review, pair programming, and mentoring early-career engineers
  • Perform data collection and analysis with our robots to identify the best solutions to the real-world challenges they face
  • Evaluate and integrate sensors and devices, and make the call on what makes it into the product
  • Help shape technical direction in sprint planning, retrospectives, and roadmap planning
  • Build a great company: it's up to you how involved you want to be. We are an open book and share the experience of building a company from customer discovery to sales to marketing, you can participate and learn all aspects of business.

As a candidate you already:
  • Have 3-6 years of professional software engineering experience, including production-deployed code
  • Have a BS or MS in Robotics, CS, EE, CompE, ME, or a related field - or equivalent experience
  • Have real depth in at least one of: control systems, computer vision, sensor fusion, motion planning, SLAM
  • Are strong in C++, comfortable in Python, and fluent with CMake and related development tools
  • Have built and shipped software on ROS (ROS 1 or ROS 2), including simulation and testing workflows
  • Write clean, tested code and have opinions about what good engineering practice looks like
  • Are comfortable working with Linux and can navigate your way around the command line
  • Have experience working with AI software development tools (Copilot, Claude Code, Codex, etc)
  • Have debugged systems where software meets hardware, and know that the log file rarely tells the whole story
  • Desire to free humans from hard, manual labor

You might also (nice-to-have):
  • Have worked on robots that operate outdoors, off-road, or in unstructured environments
  • Have experience with safety-critical systems or functional safety practices
  • Have worked on a fleet - deployment, telemetry, OTA updates, or remote diagnostics
  • Have mentored junior engineers or led a small project team
  • Have mowed a lawn or two
  • Appreciate a results-based, startup culture

The benefits we offer to full-time employees:
  • Equity
  • Employee Health Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, with options for HSA
  • 401K matching
  • Short-Term and Long-Term Disability
  • Any hardware you need: Macbook Pro? Sure. Slick ThinkPad running Ubuntu? You got it.
  • A transparent, entrepreneurial, startup culture: want to help with sales and marketing? Join in (but be ready to take on real tasks).
