Startup Machine Learning Intern information

What does a startup machine learning intern do?

A Startup Machine Learning Intern typically assists in developing, testing, and deploying machine learning models to solve real-world business problems in a fast-paced startup environment. Their responsibilities may include data preprocessing, feature engineering, model selection, and performance evaluation. Interns often collaborate closely with data scientists and software engineers, gaining hands-on experience with tools like Python, TensorFlow, or PyTorch. The role provides an opportunity to contribute directly to innovative projects and learn about the startup culture.

What are the typical responsibilities of a startup machine learning intern, and how do they contribute to the team's goals?

As a Startup Machine Learning Intern, you can expect to work on a mix of data preparation, model development, and experimental analysis. Interns often collaborate closely with data scientists, engineers, and product managers to prototype and test machine learning solutions that address real business problems. You'll likely take ownership of individual tasks, such as cleaning datasets, building and validating models, and reporting results to the team. This hands-on environment offers exposure to the full machine learning pipeline and provides opportunities to make meaningful contributions to the company's progress.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a startup machine learning intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Startup Machine Learning Intern, you typically need a solid understanding of machine learning concepts, programming proficiency in Python, and coursework or experience in data science or statistics. Familiarity with tools like TensorFlow, PyTorch, Jupyter Notebooks, and data visualization libraries, as well as version control systems like Git, is highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, initiative, and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly are essential soft skills in a dynamic startup environment. These competencies enable interns to quickly contribute to projects, adapt to evolving tasks, and support innovation within fast-paced teams.

What is the difference between Startup Machine Learning Intern vs Startup Data Scientist?

AspectStartup Machine Learning InternStartup Data Scientist
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in CS, Data Science, or related fieldsBachelor's or Master's in Data Science, Statistics, or related fields; often with experience
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, learning-focused, collaborative team settingAdvanced projects, strategic decision-making, leadership roles
Employer & Industry UsageStartups, tech companies, research labsStartups, tech firms, larger organizations with data teams

The Startup Machine Learning Intern role is an entry-level position aimed at gaining practical experience in machine learning within startup environments. In contrast, a Startup Data Scientist typically has more experience and handles complex data analysis, model development, and strategic insights. The internship is ideal for students or recent grads, while data scientists are more senior roles focused on driving data-driven decisions.

Job description

Promise Robotics is pioneering Physical AI for homebuilding - a rapidly growing, venture-backed company bringing together AI, robotics, and manufacturing to help the homebuilding industry meet the growing demand for housing. Our robotic systems, built and operated inside  AI-powered factories, give the industry the production capacity, consistency, and speed to build more high-quality homes than traditional methods allow. Our team spans AI researchers and roboticists to factory operators, technicians, and production teams - all building the future of homebuilding together.

We're building physical AI for housing - and unlike most of the field, our robots are already in production, fabricating real structures and generating real operational data every day across multiple factories.

We're looking for a Senior Robotics Software Developer to join our team and contribute to developing cutting-edge solutions for our core robotic manufacturing technologies. This is a senior IC role with architectural ownership and mentorship responsibility.

Why join us?
  • Purpose-Driven Work:Contribute to projects with significant social, economic, and environmental impact.

  • Growth Opportunities:Be part of a growth-stage startup with substantial upside and leadership potential.

  • Cutting-Edge Technology:Work on state-of-the-art robotics solutions at the intersection of construction and automation.

  • Collaborative Culture:Join a diverse, high-performing team committed to continuous learning and innovation.

What you'll do:
  • Lead the development of robotic simulators  - set up and extend simulation environments and test scenarios that mirror our production cells.

  • Lead the effort in motion planning and optimization - develop and optimize motion-planning and collision-checking behaviors in ROS 2 / MoveIt2.

  • Develop perception components - implement object detection, pose estimation, and point-cloud processing tasks for material handling and inspection.

  • Write clean, tested code - produce well-documented C++ and Python, backed by unit and integration tests.

  • Debug integration issues - help troubleshoot software-hardware issues alongside the robotics and hardware teams.

  • Set the engineering bar - define standards for architecture, testing, and code quality; lead code reviews; mentor junior and mid-level developers.

What you'll need to succeed:
  • Degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Mechatronics, or related fields (Masters/Ph.D. preferred) plus 5+ years of relevant robotics software experience.

  • Expert-level C++ and Python, with a track record of shipping production-quality robotics software.

  • Strong fundamentals in algorithms, data structures, and basic control concepts.

  • Deep ROS 2 and MoveIt2 experience - motion planning, collision checking, and trajectory optimization (e.g., OMPL, CHOMP/STOMP/TrajOpt-style approaches).

  • Ability to solve complex problems involving multi-disciplinary engineering concepts.

  • Strong hands-on experience with a robotics simulator (Gazebo, Isaac Sim, MuJoCo, or similar) including physics simulation.

  • Exposure to computer vision or perception concepts.

  • Eagerness to learn, take feedback, and work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced startup.

  • Willingness to work onsite at our R&D labs and production facilities in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experiential knowledge using Isaac Sim / Omniverse or similar simulation tools.

  • Applied or research experience with vision-language-action (VLA) models (e.g., OpenVLA, 0, RT-2-style) or LLM-based task and motion planning.

  • Industrial robot programming (KUKA, ABB, or Fanuc) and familiarity with vendor sensor/communication interfaces.

  • Sensor systems: industrial cameras, depth sensors, LiDAR, force/torque sensors, laser range finders/projectors.

  • Digital-twin technologies for validation and predictive maintenance.

  • Machine learning / deep learning applied to robotics.

  • Working knowledge of CSA Z434 and ISO 10218-2 safety standards for industrial robot systems and cell integration.

  • Experience in a fast-paced startup or scaling deep-tech environment.
