What is a startup intern?

A Startup Intern is an entry-level position where you gain hands-on experience working in a fast-paced, early-stage company. Interns typically wear multiple hats, assisting with tasks in marketing, operations, product development, and more. The role offers exposure to various aspects of running a business, making it ideal for those wanting to learn about entrepreneurship. Responsibilities can vary greatly depending on the company's needs, requiring adaptability and a proactive attitude. It's a great opportunity to develop skills, network, and contribute meaningfully to a growing business.

What does a startup intern do?

As a Startup Intern, your daily tasks can vary widely, ranging from conducting research and analyzing data, to helping with marketing efforts and supporting product development. You’ll likely collaborate with multiple team members, attend brainstorming sessions, and sometimes contribute to strategic discussions. The environment is usually fast-paced and flexible, giving interns the chance to take ownership of projects and see tangible results from their work. Because startups often have small teams, your contributions are visible and can have a significant impact, making the experience both challenging and rewarding.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a startup intern?

To thrive as a Startup Intern, you need a versatile skill set that includes problem-solving, basic business acumen, and the ability to learn quickly, often demonstrated through relevant coursework or hands-on experience. Familiarity with productivity tools like Google Workspace, project management software, and sometimes basic coding or data analysis platforms can be beneficial. Strong communication, adaptability, initiative, and a collaborative mindset are highly valued soft skills in this fast-paced environment. These abilities are vital because startup roles are often fluid, requiring interns to take on diverse tasks, quickly adapt to change, and contribute effectively to small, dynamic teams.

Job description

Coalitions Intern

The American Enterprise Institute (AEI) Coalitions team helps AEI scholars connect their research with audiences inside and outside Washington, DC. We focus on getting scholarly work from the website to the community. Interns must have a startup mentality and an ability to identify new ways to add value across the organization. The most successful interns will be interested in and familiar with AEI scholars' work, exhibit strong writing and organizational skills, and be curious about nonprofit management and public relations.

Duties will include facilitating conferences and events for AEI's contacts in DC and across the country, writing weekly communications for core AEI constituencies, identifying opportunities to develop new partnerships with organizations around the United States, organizing constituent data, and assisting with other short- and long-term projects. Projects can include assisting with planning and executing a regional summit, maintaining contact records, researching new scholar initiatives, and collaborating with team members to brainstorm future partnerships with scholars across the institute. The Coalitions intern must be available to complete the internship in person for 25-40 hours per week.

AEI internships offer a unique opportunity for undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates to gain experience in research, writing, business, and communications at one of the nation's leading think tanks.

Competitive candidates will generally have a GPA of 3.5 or higher from a top-ranking college or university. AEI's internship program runs for 12 weeks and all related programming will take place in-person in Washington, DC. Please see the internship program home page for updates.

The fall program dates are either Tuesday, September 8, to Friday, December 4, or Tuesday, September 15, to Friday, December 11.
