How much do startup audit jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 31, 2026, the average yearly pay for startup audit in the United States is $120,236.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $104,000.00 and $136,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a startup audit?

A startup audit is a thorough examination of a startup's financial statements, business processes, and compliance with relevant laws and regulations. The purpose of the audit is to ensure accuracy and transparency in financial reporting, identify potential risks, and provide credibility for investors or stakeholders. Startup audits may also help founders identify areas for operational improvement and prepare for future funding rounds or regulatory requirements.

What unique challenges might I encounter when performing audits for startups compared to established companies?

Auditing startups often involves navigating rapidly changing business models, less formalized internal controls, and limited historical financial data. You'll need to be adaptable, as startups may pivot their strategies quickly, which can impact financial records and compliance. Collaborating closely with founders and small teams is common, so strong communication skills and the ability to provide practical, scalable recommendations are essential. These challenges make startup auditing dynamic and can offer accelerated learning and growth opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a startup auditor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Startup Auditor, you need a strong background in accounting, auditing principles, and financial analysis, usually supported by a degree in accounting or finance and ideally a CPA or equivalent certification. Familiarity with audit software (such as CaseWare or IDEA), cloud-based accounting systems, and regulatory frameworks is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate findings clearly are essential soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate financial oversight, compliance, and valuable insights that help startups build credibility and manage risk effectively.

Job description

About Clark
Clark is building the trust infrastructure for the AI economy.
We're starting with audit and accounting workflows-high-trust environments where reliability, accuracy, and security matter as much as productivity. Our platform helps firms automate complex audit workflows, deploy AI safely, and modernize how audit teams operate.
We're building a team that combines deep accounting expertise with exceptional product thinking to redefine how audit gets done.
The Role
We're looking for an Audit Engineer to serve as the bridge between our customers and our product.
You'll work directly with accounting firms as they evaluate, implement, and scale Clark across their teams. You'll develop a deep understanding of customer workflows, help firms adopt the platform successfully, and translate real-world audit challenges into product improvements.
This is a highly cross-functional role sitting at the intersection of customer success, implementation, product, and engineering. You'll partner closely with customers, our head of product, and engineers to ensure Clark solves the problems that matter most.
Why This Role Matters
As Clark grows, understanding customer workflows becomes one of our greatest competitive advantages.
The Audit Solutions team ensures that customer feedback is translated into better products, smoother implementations, and stronger long-term customer relationships.
Success in this role directly improves customer adoption, accelerates implementation timelines, and helps shape the future direction of the product.
What You'll Do
  • Lead customer workflow discovery during implementations
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to customers throughout onboarding and adoption
  • Run weekly customer check-ins and manage ongoing communications
  • Support pilot engagements and new product rollouts
  • Translate customer pain points into actionable product feedback
  • Create and manage Linear issues for engineering teams, ensuring customer requests are tracked through resolution
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to prioritize customer needs
  • Identify opportunities to improve implementation playbooks and internal processes
  • Help customers redesign workflows to take advantage of AI-powered automation
  • Build trusted relationships with audit partners, managers, and staff

Who You Are
  • 5-10 years of audit or assurance experience
  • CPA preferred
  • Experience at a Big 4 or Top 25 accounting firm
  • Strong understanding of audit methodology and client workflows
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Highly organized with exceptional project management abilities
  • Comfortable managing multiple customer engagements simultaneously
  • Curious about technology and excited by AI's potential to transform audit
  • High ownership mentality and comfortable operating in a fast-moving startup environment

Bonus
  • Experience with audit technology or workflow automation tools
  • Experience implementing enterprise software
  • Exposure to AI, data analytics, Alteryx, Power BI, SQL, or process automation
  • Experience leading firm innovation or transformation initiatives
  • Prior customer-facing, implementation, or consulting experience

You do not need prior startup experience, but you should be excited to work with urgency, embrace ambiguity, and help build the operating system of a growing company.
The Environment
  • 5 days a week on-site in NYC - no remote or hybrid
  • Startup hours and pace - this isn't a 9-to-5
  • Flat structure, no hierarchy - everyone ships
  • High ownership - you own outcomes, not just tasks
Benefits
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Wellhub Platinum membership
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Free company dinner every day
