Job description
We have an exciting opportunity for a Standards Publications Specialist at UL Standards & Engagement This is a hybrid opportunity based in Evanston, IL or Raleigh-Durham, NC
The Standards Publications Specialist will support the publication of standards and related content in support of UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) mission to make the world safer, more secure, and more sustainable. Leveraging experience in technical editing, document preparation, and XML-based publishing, the Standards Publications Specialist will ensure standards content is accurate, consistent, accessible, and publication-ready across digital and traditional publishing platforms. The Senior Standards Publications Coordinator will collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to maintain content integrity and contribute to continuous improvement of the standards publishing process.
UL Standards & Engagement:
At UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE), we expand the boundaries of safety science to create a more secure and sustainable world. For more than a century, we have created new safety standards and shared our findings with academia, scientists, manufacturers, and policymakers across industries. We identify critical safety and sustainability issues, asking tough questions because we believe a safer world begins with knowledge.
Build a safer, more secure, and sustainable future with us. Join us and work with our Standards teams who develop the standards required to put that knowledge into practice.
What you'll learn and achieve:
As the Standards Publications Specialist, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:
- Coordinate and support publishing activities associated with the development, maintenance and release of standards, technical documents and related publications.
- Prepare, edit, proof and format standards content, ensuring accuracy, adherence to style requirements and readiness for publication.
- Utilize Oxygen XML Editor to review, edit, and validate XML documents used within structured publishing workflows. Apply working knowledge of NISO Standards Tag Suite (STS) to support content tagging, document structure validation, metadata management, and publication quality assurance activities.
- Review tables, figures, charts, references, annexes, and other document elements to ensure formatting consistency, proper organization, and alignment with publishing standards.
- Conduct comprehensive quality control reviews to identify and resolve formatting, content, structural, and publication-related issues prior to release.
- Maintain organized records, document repositories, version control processes, and supporting documentation to ensure traceability and effective content management.
- Collaborate with standards development teams, technical contributors, and internal stakeholders to facilitate efficient publishing workflows and timely project completion.
- Identify opportunities to improve publishing processes, tools, and workflow efficiencies, and recommend practical solutions to enhance quality and productivity.
- Manage multiple publishing assignments simultaneously, balancing competing priorities while consistently meeting established deadlines, service expectations, and quality standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What you'll experience working at UL Standards & Engagement: We have pursued our mission of working for a safer, more secure, and sustainable world for nearly 130 years, embedding conscientious stewardship into everything we do.
- People: Our people make us special. You'll work with a diverse team of experts respected for their independence and transparency and build a network, because our approach is collaborative. We collaborate across disciplines, organizations, and geographies to build the global scientific response that today's global challenges require.
- Interesting work: Every day is different for us here. We see what's on the horizon and use our expertise to build the foundations of a safer future. You'll have the opportunity to push the boundaries of human understanding as part of a team working to advance the public good.
- Grow and achieve: We learn, work, and grow together through targeted development, reward, and recognition programs.
- Values. Four core values guide our work: collaboration, respect, integrity, and beneficence. By living our values, we inspire the trust essential to fulfilling our mission and foster partnerships that enable us to pursue a beneficent future in which we all can thrive.
- Total Rewards: All employees at UL Standards & Engagement are eligible for bonus compensation. We offer comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans and a generous 401k matching structure of up to 5% of eligible pay. Moreover, we invest an additional 4% into your retirement saving fund after your first year of continuous employment. Depending on your role, you may be able to discuss flexible working arrangements with your manager. We also provide employees with paid time off, including vacation, holiday, sick, and volunteer days.
What makes you a great fit:
While no one candidate will embody every quality, the successful candidate will bring many of the following professional competencies and personal attributes:
- Demonstrated application and knowledge in technical editing, document preparation, proofreading, and publication quality assurance with exceptional attention to detail.
- Knowledge of structured content principles and XML-based publishing environments, including the ability to navigate and support digital publishing workflows.
- Experience in Oxygen XML Editor for content editing, review, validation and document management activities.
- Experience with NISO STS or comparable XML tagging used within standards or structured content publishing.
- Ability to evaluate system functionality, identify root cause, and recommend practical solutions.
- Practical knowledge in the area of specialization with the ability to execute end-to-end processes or structure projects to deliver successful outcomes.
- Problem-solving skills and experience analyzing and addressing issues with expertise in developing and implementing contingency plans.
- Strong communication, presentation and facilitation skills, with ability to communicate key concepts and information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Positive and collaborative interpersonal skills, with proven capability in fostering collaboration and partnership across teams to develop solutions with broad impact.
- Strong organizational and project coordination skills with ability to manage detailed publishing activities from initiation through final release.
Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:
- Bachelor's degree in English, Technical Communication, Publishing, Information Science, Library Science, or related field. Advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum 3 years related work experience.
- Experience in preparing, editing, and quality assuring publication-ready technical documents.
