Job description

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

The Code Enforcement Officer position duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  1. Perform general administrative tasks including staffing of the public counter, answering inquires via phone or email, business license review, ordinance enforcement, and general office duties.
  2. Performs permit administrative duties including, but not limited to, answering public inquiries, and acting as a liaison between the project applicant, the Township, and the community.
  3. Perform physical and visual inspections of all phases of permitted new construction to ensure that building components meet provisions of building, grading, zoning, and safety laws and approved plans, specifications, and industry standards.
  4. Maintains daily log of construction and inspection activities on a computer database system and compares progress reports.
  5. Patrol an assigned area of the Township to identify and evaluate problem areas and/or ordinance violations; determine proper method to resolve violations.
  6. Receive and respond to citizen complaints and reports from other agencies and departments on alleged violations of Township codes and ordinances; perform investigation of complaints and reports and provide recommendations for resolution.
  7. Maintain accurate documentation and case files on all investigations, inspections, enforcement actions, and other job related activities including accurate and detailed information regarding code enforcement activity to substantiate violations; draw diagrams and illustrations and take photographs.
  8. Prepare documentation and exhibits in support of legal actions taken by the Township, appear in court as necessary, and testify at hearings and in court proceedings as required.
  9. Educate the public on International Property Maintenance Code and Township and code requirements.
  10. Participate in committee work for the department and/or Township as deemed appropriate by the Chief Building and Zoning Officer and/or Township Manager.
  11. Provide other services and perform other tasks as requested or assigned by the Chief Building and Zoning Officer and/or Township Manager.
