Artistic Support
Full-Time Position
Under the direction of the Production Stage Manager, the Stage Manager is responsible for maintaining general production standards, procedures, and practices within the local production. The Stage Manager must be able to communicate with multiple production departments and management and be able to deliver information productively to performers and crew alike. Superior people management, organization, and communication skills are vital for this position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.
• Ensure that Blue Man Group values and artistic vision are understood and supported across the organization;
• Assist the Production Stage Manager in ensuring that each performance runs in accordance with Blue Man Group standards;
• Maintain consistent calling standards of the show and assist to ensure safe running of all activities backstage, onstage, and within the theater;
• As a Calling Stage Manager, serve as functional supervisor to the crew during rehearsals and performances;
• As an Assistant Stage Manager, collaborate with the Calling Stage Manager and Lead Carpenter during performances. Lead the pre-show preparation and sound check process, including balancing performer creative exploration and a focused process, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and on-time. Problem-solve and trouble shoot as necessary;
• Maintain open communication with Front of House staff and/or Theater Management during preshow, throughout performances, and post-show;
• Facilitate the post-show performer discussion in a way to provide a safe, comfortable environment which allows performers to productively collaborate and share their multiple perspectives from the performance;
• Gather, record, and distribute performance and technical observations when calling the show. Coordinate and manage rehearsals, workshops, training, etc. as required;
• Supervise the creation, maintenance, and distribution of weekly schedules;
• Maintain open communication with the Production Stage Manager, Blue Man Captain and Resident Music Director to help strengthen the Blue Man and Band combinations through scheduling;
• Monitor the daily production-related activities of the space and alert the Production Stage Manager of any scheduling concerns or conflicts. Work with all departments to create and maintainan accurate schedule for the production;
• Gather and record updates to the production schedule and distribute information to the appropriate departmentsregarding any space scheduling changes;
• Ensure the Blue Men and Band schedules are complete and in accordance with Blue Man Group policies and procedures;
• Create crew requests for rehearsals/gigs/workshops as needed in conjunction with the Production Stage Manager. Distribute crew requests and follow up to ensure staff is scheduled;
• Coordinate the rehearsal room schedule as necessary;
• Evaluate long-term performer staffing and identify needs for outside performer coverage;
• Coordinate all vacation and schedule requests made by performers in conjunction with the Production Stage Manager. Contribute to the weekly payroll approval process as applicable;
• Ensure smooth operation of the local Stage Management Department;
• Assist with the scheduling and execution of rehearsals, new performer training, workshops, cross training, gig rehearsals, etc. as required;
• Maintain paperwork and templates, including but not limited to performance reports, calling script, schedules, Department Operations Manual, and archival records;
• Maintain and distribute Production Crew running track sheets and regularly request updates and feedback from the Production Heads of Department to ensure track sheets remainup-to-date;
• Provide day-to-day support of the production's artistic process;
• Support the local direction team members including the Production Stage Manager, Blue Man Captain and Resident Music Director. Engage in regular show watches and provide feedback and recommendations for show improvements to the Production Stage Manager;
• Assist Production Stage Manager in the coordination of Artistic direction visits and direction calls as necessary;
• Catalog local training materials for Blue Men and Band. Make copies and distribute as needed. Maintain original copies for archival purposes;
• Serve as a member of the local management team;
• Foster a healthy environment and direct communication between the Stage Management department, General Manager, Production Manager, Heads of Departments, Theatre Operations Manager, Crew, Blue Men, and Band;
• Assist and encourage communication between company members within and between Blue Man Group cities;
• Collaborate with the Stage Management teams of other Blue Man Group cities as needed to facilitate exchange of ideas and systems;
• Communicate to the Production Stage Manager updates, problems, aesthetic questions, and needs on behalf of the community;
• Serve as a member of the Safety Team;
• Adhere to safety rules and regulations for locality. Participate in maintaining Blue Man Group's health and safety culture with employees;
• Complete accident reports as required;
• Liaise with the local Safety Team as necessary;
• Ensure Stage Manager coverage and execute duties for all local Blue Man events as requested;
• These events include (but are not limited to) rehearsals, press events, shows and outside gigs;
• Manage and organize performers and crew as needed;
• Participate in load-in, rehearsals, performance/gig, and load-out as necessary;
• Support company policies, procedures, and practices;
• Understand the Company Member Handbook and Blue Man Group policies and procedures;
• Ensure Company Members perform their duties in accordance with the Company Member Handbook and Blue Man Group policies and procedures;
• Perform general administrative duties including reporting, paperwork, meeting minutes, etc.;
• Attend all full company meetings, Stage Management meetings, and other company or department meetings;
• All other work-related duties as assigned;
