What does a staff psychologist do?

A Staff Psychologist is a licensed mental health professional who provides psychological assessment, diagnosis, and therapy to individuals or groups within an organization, such as a hospital, clinic, university, or government agency. Their duties typically include conducting evaluations, developing treatment plans, offering counseling services, and sometimes participating in research or staff training. Staff Psychologists may work with a wide range of mental health issues, and they often collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care for their clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a staff psychologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Staff Psychologist, you need a doctoral degree in psychology, a state license, and a strong foundation in psychological assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, psychological testing tools, and ongoing continuing education or certifications is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and the ability to maintain professional boundaries help psychologists build trust and effectively support diverse clients. These skills and qualities are critical for providing high-quality mental health care, ensuring ethical practice, and fostering positive outcomes for individuals and organizations.
