What is a staff data engineer?

Staff Data Engineers are senior-level professionals responsible for designing, building, and maintaining large-scale data processing systems and architectures. They often lead technical initiatives, set data engineering standards, and mentor other engineers within a company. Staff Data Engineers work closely with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure reliable and efficient data pipelines. Their role requires deep expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, distributed systems, and cloud technologies. They play a crucial part in enabling organizations to make data-driven decisions at scale.

How does a staff data engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver data-driven solutions?

As a Staff Data Engineer, you’ll frequently partner with data scientists, analysts, and product managers to understand project requirements and design scalable data systems. You'll be responsible for translating business needs into technical specifications, recommending best practices, and mentoring junior engineers. Collaboration often involves participating in sprint planning, code reviews, and architecture discussions to ensure data solutions are robust, secure, and aligned with organizational goals. Effective communication and a proactive approach to problem-solving are key to successful collaboration in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a staff data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Staff Data Engineer, you need advanced proficiency in data architecture, programming (such as Python, Java, or Scala), and experience with large-scale data systems, supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with big data tools (Hadoop, Spark), cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), and relevant certifications like Google Professional Data Engineer or AWS Data Analytics are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and leadership skills help drive cross-functional projects and mentor junior engineers. These skills ensure the design, implementation, and maintenance of robust data infrastructure that supports organizational decision-making and scalability.

Job description

Contract: DOW - Women, Peace, and Security Act Mission Support

Work Location: Pentagon, Washington D.C. Metro

Reporting Hours: Eastern Business Hours

Clearance: Top Secret

Travel: Not required

Geocgi is looking for a Data Engineer to support the Department of War's Women, Peace, and Security mission requirements by developing, organizing, and sustaining the data environment needed for analysis, reporting, and decision support across Joint Staff and partner organizations. This role identifies mission-relevant data sources, engineers reliable access to those sources, and transforms raw information into curated, usable datasets that support operational, statutory, training, and leadership reporting. The position works in a secure government environment and collaborates closely with analysts, subject matter experts, and government stakeholders to improve data quality, accessibility, and consistency. The role also supports development and maintenance of WPS AI-enabled tools and other in-scope data support activities as directed.
This position is a on-site opportunity at the Pentagon in northern Virginia.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain, and improve automated data pipelines to ingest, clean, transform, and integrate information from multiple mission-critical data sources into centralized repositories. Manage curated datasets as discoverable assets, including organizing metadata, documenting data definitions, and maintaining data standards that support reliable analysis and reporting.
  • Identify, acquire, and engineer access to data sources across the Department of Defense, Joint Staff, and interagency stakeholders in support of WPS mission requirements. Support collection, collation, validation, and preparation of data used for statutory reporting, NATO reporting, planning inputs, leadership decision support, and other recurring mission deliverables.
  • Partner with analysts, WPS subject matter experts, and government personnel to translate operational requirements into practical data solutions. Contribute to reporting products, course survey summaries, analytical support efforts, and continuous improvement of data processes, repositories, and AI-enabled tools that support mission execution.
  • Maintain clear technical and functional documentation for datasets, workflows, and standards to promote usability, traceability, and continuity. Ensure data assets are structured and maintained in a way that supports accessibility, consistency, and downstream analytical use in a sensitive government environment.

As an employee of geocgi, the Data Engineer will have access to a generous benefits package, in addition to a corporate culture and community of GIS geeks. Our benefits include but are not limited to:

  • Competitive salaries, commensurate with experience and leading Federal Contractors in the geospatial industry.
  • Opportunities for upward mobility in a dynamic fast paced environment within a small company.
  • Merit-based spot and end of year bonuses.
  • Safe Harbor 401(k) plan with immediate vesting.
  • Flexible work hours and PTO.
  • Enjoy 100% company-paid medical, dental, and vision premiums for individual employees. Coverage extensions for spouses and child dependents are available for purchase through the company plan.
  • Company paid training, certifications, and professional growth and development.

The following are requirements of the Data Engineer:

  • U.S. Citizen with Active Top Secret clearance.
  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Required experience includes joint doctrine, strategic planning, the operational planning process, and DoD security cooperation.
  • Minimum of three years (3) of experience leading data-centric programs, with demonstrated expertise in designing and implementing enterprise data strategy, architecture, and governance.
  • Hands-on mastery of data engineering, including building and maintaining secure data pipelines and managing data warehouse solutions in a cloud environment (e.g., AWS, Azure).
  • Must demonstrate expert-level proficiency with data programming languages (e.g., Python, R) and the development of interactive dashboards for senior leadership using visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access) to support analysis, reporting, and coordination.

The following are preferred of the Data Engineer:

  • Preferred candidates have experience in data management, data engineering, analytics support, reporting operations, or information organization in a mission-driven environment. They should be able to design practical data solutions, manage structured and semi-structured information, and maintain disciplined documentation and metadata practices that support long-term usability and governance.
  • Experience supporting Department of Defense, Joint Staff, combatant command, interagency, or other federal organizations is strongly preferred. Candidates should be comfortable working with multiple stakeholders, handling evolving mission requirements, and supporting data-driven decision-making in a secure or classified environment.
  • Experience with data pipeline development, repository management, data cataloging, reporting workflows, and data quality improvement is highly desirable. Familiarity with mission support related to statutory reporting, training reporting, leadership reporting, or AI-enabled workflow support is also beneficial.

The annual base salary range for this position is anticipated to be $110,000-$130,000 USD. The listed salary range represents our good faith estimate for this position. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only.
