What is a stack tester?

A Stack Tester is responsible for conducting emissions testing on industrial stacks to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. They collect air samples, operate testing equipment, and analyze emissions data. The role involves working outdoors, traveling to various sites, and following strict safety protocols. Stack Testers help industries meet air quality standards and regulatory requirements set by agencies like the EPA.

What are the typical daily responsibilities and work conditions for a stack tester?

Stack Testers spend much of their day collecting air samples from emission sources like smokestacks at industrial facilities using specialized equipment, often in outdoor or high-elevation environments. The role involves setting up, calibrating, and operating monitoring instruments, accurately recording data onsite, and later preparing detailed reports for compliance with environmental regulations. You may work in varying weather conditions and sometimes at significant heights or within safety-restricted zones, so adherence to safety procedures is critical. Work schedules can be irregular due to the need to conduct tests during plant downtime or according to regulatory requirements, and Stack Testers frequently collaborate with plant operators, environmental engineers, and regulatory officials. This role is ideal for those who enjoy hands-on technical work, troubleshooting, and contributing to environmental protection.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the stack tester position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Stack Tester, you need a solid understanding of emissions testing protocols, environmental science, and analytical data collection, often supported by relevant technical training or certifications such as EPA Method 5 or NIOSH courses. Proficiency with stack sampling equipment, gas analyzers, and software for data logging and reporting is essential. Strong attention to detail, physical stamina, and effective communication help Stack Testers succeed, especially when working outdoors or as part of a team at industrial sites. These abilities ensure accurate emissions measurements, regulatory compliance, and the safe execution of testing procedures.

Job description

At Apple, we believe the people who build our products deserve systems built with that same care. That belief is what drives People Systems. Behind every revolutionary hardware launch, breakthrough service, and magical customer experience are the passionate people who make it all possible. This is our pursuit: to be the unseen force behind a world-class employee experience for the most exceptional people on Earth โ€” realized through obsessively crafting and caring for the systems that hire, reward, and support our talent as they grow, thrive, and do the best work of their lives. Sitting at the vibrant intersection of technology, people, and business, we architect the platforms behind every stage of that journey: Recruiting, Onboarding, Core HR, Payroll, Compensation, and Benefits. Our systems don\'t just process transactions; they shape how people experience working here.

Description

When you engineer for People Systems, your users are Apple\'s most vital asset: its people. We\'re looking for a Full Stack Software Engineer who can architect reliable backend services and design intuitive, accessible user interfaces with equal rigor. As a Full Stack Software Engineer on our team, you will own features end-to-end, from design through deployment. You\'ll build responsive, high-performance web applications using React and TypeScript, and develop the Java / Spring Boot microservices, APIs, and data layers that power them behind the scenes. We value engineers with a strong product mindset who make architectural decisions that balance immediate delivery with long-term platform health. You\'ll design domain models that capture complex business rules without becoming unmaintainable, and build systems that are observable, testable, and resilient by default, not as an afterthought. Collaboration is central to how we work. You\'ll partner with product managers and cross-functional engineering teams to understand problems deeply before reaching for solutions. The best engineers here ask "why" before "how."If you care deeply about craftsmanship from the UI layer to the database and want to build software where scale meets human empathy, come join us to do the best work of your life.

Minimum Qualifications

3 years of professional experience building production systems spanning both backend and frontend. 3 years of professional experience in JavaScript (ES6+), TypeScript, React, HTML5, and modern CSS/styling frameworks, with a solid understanding of state management and component lifecycles. 3 years of professional experience developing backend APIs and microservices using Java (Spring / Spring Boot) or Node.js/TypeScript. 3 years of professional experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs, along with working knowledge of relational or NoSQL databases and basic SQL query optimization. BS/MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience writing automated tests (unit/integration) and using modern build/source control tools (Git, Webpack/Vite, npm/yarn, CI/CD pipelines). Understanding of responsive web design principles and accessibility standards (WCAG / semantic HTML). Ability to debug and reason about issues across the full stack, from network layer to UI rendering. Demonstrated proficiency using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate design, coding, testing, and debugging workflows Experience building accessible, internationalized web applications Experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka, RabbitMQ, or equivalent messaging platforms) Familiarity with distributed systems concepts: consistency, fault tolerance, and failure modes Exposure to performance optimization โ€” both backend (caching, query tuning) and frontend Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative team-first mindset.
