What is a Stack Tester job?

A Stack Tester is responsible for conducting emissions testing on industrial stacks to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. They collect air samples, operate testing equipment, and analyze emissions data. The role involves working outdoors, traveling to various sites, and following strict safety protocols. Stack Testers help industries meet air quality standards and regulatory requirements set by agencies like the EPA.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Stack Tester position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Stack Tester, you need a solid understanding of emissions testing protocols, environmental science, and analytical data collection, often supported by relevant technical training or certifications such as EPA Method 5 or NIOSH courses. Proficiency with stack sampling equipment, gas analyzers, and software for data logging and reporting is essential. Strong attention to detail, physical stamina, and effective communication help Stack Testers succeed, especially when working outdoors or as part of a team at industrial sites. These abilities ensure accurate emissions measurements, regulatory compliance, and the safe execution of testing procedures.

What are the typical daily responsibilities and work conditions for a Stack Tester?

Stack Testers spend much of their day collecting air samples from emission sources like smokestacks at industrial facilities using specialized equipment, often in outdoor or high-elevation environments. The role involves setting up, calibrating, and operating monitoring instruments, accurately recording data onsite, and later preparing detailed reports for compliance with environmental regulations. You may work in varying weather conditions and sometimes at significant heights or within safety-restricted zones, so adherence to safety procedures is critical. Work schedules can be irregular due to the need to conduct tests during plant downtime or according to regulatory requirements, and Stack Testers frequently collaborate with plant operators, environmental engineers, and regulatory officials. This role is ideal for those who enjoy hands-on technical work, troubleshooting, and contributing to environmental protection.

Job description

Job Description
Full Stack Engineer with Java/GCP - REMOTE
Why you want to work at Flexion:
We're looking for a Full Stack Engineer with an unwavering passion for designing meaningful, easy-to-use applications. Most of the work we do is on large-scale, enterprise-wide systems (both commercial and government)-this project, in particular, will help ensure that millions of Americans receive high-quality healthcare.
At Flexion (an agile software company that's been delivering excellence for over 25 years), our company culture is built on autonomy, trust, and transparency. We empower teams to remain autonomous and self-directed by hiring people who can solve complex problems by functioning collaboratively-this means lending a hand and flexing your multi-skilled muscles (Analysis, Development, Design) as needed. Every member within a cross-functional team is a leader who takes responsibility for the entire team's success, which mirrors the company's overall approach of low hierarchy. We believe that growth comes from working together-and that includes supporting each other through thoughtful, constructive feedback. Flexion team members are expected to help each other grow, challenge ideas respectfully, and integrate feedback as a normal part of the workday.
What the job looks like:
We are looking for a full-stack engineer with strong application design and development skills. In this role, you must possess excellent problem-solving skills and deep technical knowledge with a strong aptitude for appreciating the focus, scope, and impact of your work in a much wider and forward-looking software landscape. You should also be able to demonstrate a history of technical leadership, excellent communication, and a positive attitude. You'll be part of a multi-disciplinary, agile application development team tasked with operating and enhancing an enterprise government system.
Why we want to hire you:
You can design small pieces as you go, while still thinking about how they fit into the whole. You welcome change as a positive thing (instead of viewing it as "rework") and never look at anything you deliver as "final." You understand when "good enough" really IS good enough, without ever compromising on the overall product quality. You understand that a focus on team health, communications and problem-solving are what creates a good working team.
You have:
  • 5+ years of engineering experience
  • BS (or higher) in Computer Science or a related field
  • Self-motivated with strong communication skills
  • Passion for learning new technologies and the ability to do so quickly
  • Ability to write high-quality code efficiently
  • At least five years of Java Development experience
  • At least two years of Google Cloud Platform work experience
  • Test-Driven Development
  • Agile Development and Mindset
  • Typescript/JavaScript development experience
  • Developing Restful JSON APIs
  • Experience with SQL
  • At least two years of Google Cloud Platform work experience
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Codex, Copilot) to accelerate delivery and improve code quality.

Nice to have:
  • DevOps experience
  • Experience with CSS
  • Angular
  • Shifting testing left
  • All aspects of full test automation

At Flexion, we live by these principles:
  • Speak openly and honestly with your colleagues and clients about problems and proposed solutions
  • Welcome and handle changing requirements and priorities with little or no warning
  • Collaborate online in small groups about 50% of the time
  • Encourage simple and minimal solutions that keep options open
  • Expect and vocally advocate for quality first
  • Learn new practices and techniques as the situation demands
  • Ensure the teams develop demonstrable software every week or two
  • Do what needs to be done to deliver the product or project without ego or attitude
  • Dig deep to find the root causes of problems so we can create the right solutions
  • Relentlessly improve yourself, your team, and your processes
  • Offer and welcome constructive feedback as a tool for continuous team and individual growth
  • Embrace AI-powered development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Copilot) as force multipliers to accelerate innovation, iterate rapidly, and maintain high-quality output across the stack.

The most efficient way to reach our recruiting team is to submit your resume through the URL provided.
The salary range for this role is $130,000 to $150,000. At Flexion, employees enjoy comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage, along with life and disability insurance, flexible spending accounts, and a 401(k) plan. Our people-first culture supports balance and growth with generous paid time off, referral bonuses, and a commitment to well-being and career success.
