The Director of Music and Liturgy is responsible for enabling parishioners to encounter Jesus Christ through the music within the liturgical celebrations and worship experiences of the parish. The director is tasked with ensuring that the liturgical music assists the assembled believers to express the gift of faith that is within them and to bring a spirit of unity through music into the celebration. The director is responsible for development, implementation, evaluation and ongoing improvement of the parish music initiatives. The director must demonstrate strong leadership skills necessary to identify, develop and retain strong teams of volunteer leaders critical to the success of parish ministry. The director of music and liturgy is an on-campus position in the parish office, but hybrid opportunities are available as needed. The position is housed at the St. Giles Campus in Oak Park.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the planning for all parish liturgies and worship, including Sundays, Holy Days, Sacramental celebrations, the Liturgical seasons, special events, weddings and funerals.
  • Assist with weekly and special school liturgies as needed.
  • Provide musical planning, leadership and accompaniment for all liturgical celebrations.
  • Foster the development of adult and youth leadership in music ministry by providing ongoing training and resources for choirs, cantors and accompanists.
  • Organize, plan and develop appropriate repertoire for liturgical services.
  • Responsible for keeping the musical and liturgical integrity of musical groups:
  • Cantors, Choirs- adult, school, teen, children, handbell
  • Prepare annual budget based with Operations Director and Business manager
  • Remain current on developments in Catholic worship through
  • participation in professional committees, conferences, and literature.
  • Act as parish liaison to the Archdiocese of Chicago Office for Divine Worship,
  • National Association of Pastoral Musicians, and NPM Chicago.
  • Collaborate with and support other ministries
  • Provide worship aids for the liturgical seasons and large liturgical events and secure copyright privileges and report copyright usage.
  • Lead the parish liturgy committee (seasonal planning) in planning parish liturgies and developing the celebration of liturgical seasons.
  • Maintain liturgical instruments and sound equipment.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members in the formation of adult ministers such as Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, servers and Ministers of Consolation.
  • Maintain the liturgical ministry schedule (Ministry Scheduler Pro).
  • Co-ordinate the Ministers of Consolation to plan funeral liturgies.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Liturgy and Music from the Family Mass Community by sharing resources and planning various celebrations and events.
  • Work with members of the Catholic Community of Oak Park to plan celebrations and events for the Liturgical Seasons.
  • Play for a Sunday evening mass at St. Edmund Church for the Oak Park Catholic Community on rotation with other musicians.
  • Coordinate liturgy and music with Praise Choir monthly and African American Heritage Mass
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings.
  • Familiarity with technology used for communicating and presenting.
  • Availability to work weekends and evenings as needed
  • Perform other duties as requested, delegated or assigned.

Preferred Job Skills and Experience
  • Master's Degree in Liturgy, Sacred Music, Pastoral Studies, or equivalent.
  • Previous experience leading parish music ministry: ability to plan and evaluate liturgical celebrations in fidelity to the official liturgical books and Catholic liturgical theology.
  • Open to ongoing formation / education as needed.
  • Experience in bilingual celebrations (English Spanish) helpful
  • Director must be both versatile in accompaniment both on the piano and organ

This position has a salary range of $56,934-$65,477. An employee's pay within the range is based on relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, location & business needs.
