MTSS Coordinator / School Counselor

Reports To: School Principal / Executive Director
Work Year: 10 months (or per school calendar)
Position Summary
The MTSS Coordinator / School Counselor leads the implementation of the school's Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to ensure all students receive appropriate academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support. This role integrates student counseling, restorative behavior practices, intervention coordination, and schoolwide assessment management.
The MTSS Coordinator facilitates Student Success Team (SST) processes, provides direct counseling to students, supports staff in implementing interventions, and coordinates administration of state and local assessments including CAASPP, ELPAC, and NWEA MAP. The position plays a critical role in supporting student well-being, improving outcomes, and maintaining a positive school climate.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
MTSS Leadership & Student Intervention
• Coordinate and oversee the school's MTSS framework, including Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 interventions.
• Facilitate Student Success Team (SST) meetings, including preparation, documentation, and follow-up.
• Collaborate with teachers to identify students needing academic, behavioral, or social-emotional support.
• Support implementation of evidence-based interventions and progress monitoring.
• Maintain systems to track intervention data and student outcomes.
Counseling Services
• Provide direct individual and small group counseling for students experiencing social-emotional or behavioral challenges.
• Develop and monitor student support plans.
• Collaborate with teachers and families to support student well-being and success.
• Coordinate referrals to outside mental health providers when appropriate.
• Support crisis response and student safety planning.
Behavior Support & Restorative Practices
• Lead the implementation of restorative practices to address behavior and strengthen school culture.
• Facilitate restorative conferences, circles, and mediation.
• Support staff with positive behavior interventions and classroom management strategies.
• Work with students and families to repair harm and restore relationships following behavioral incidents.
• Maintain documentation related to behavior support and discipline processes.
Assessment Coordination
• Serve as the school Assessment Coordinator.
• Coordinate administration of CAASPP, ELPAC, and NWEA MAP assessments.
• Ensure compliance with testing protocols and security procedures.
• Coordinate testing schedules, training, materials, and accommodations.
• Support staff in interpreting and using assessment data.
Data & Collaboration
• Analyze academic, behavioral, and assessment data to identify trends and student needs.
• Participate in leadership and data team meetings.
• Monitor progress of students receiving interventions.
Family Partnership
• Communicate with families regarding student support plans and interventions.
• Facilitate family participation in SST meetings.
• Provide guidance to families on available student supports and resources.
Qualifications
Required
• Master's degree in counseling, school psychology, social work, or related field
• Valid California Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential in School Counseling
• Experience providing counseling services to students
• Experience working with diverse student populations
Preferred
• Experience implementing MTSS frameworks
• Experience facilitating SST meetings
• Knowledge of restorative practices
• Experience coordinating CAASPP, ELPAC, and NWEA MAP assessments
