NSC Staffing is actively seeking experienced Marine Blaster Painters to join our team in Norfolk, VA. Candidates must be certified to SSPC C7 and either C14 Industrial Coating Application Specialist or C12 Spray Application Specialist standards. This role involves performing abrasive blasting, surface preparation, and application of marine coatings on vessels and structural components in shipyard and dry dock environments.
Position Overview:
As a Marine Blaster Painter, you will carry out abrasive blasting, apply coatings, and ensure all work meets SSPC/NACE specifications, safety requirements, and quality standards. This position requires knowledge of blasting equipment, coating application techniques, and shipyard safety procedures, including confined space entry.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform abrasive blasting to SSPC-SP and/or NACE standards on steel surfaces, vessels, and structures.
  • Apply marine and industrial coatings via airless spray, brush, or roller according to project specifications.
  • Read and interpret work packages, drawings, and coating data sheets.
  • Set up and operate blasting equipment, compressors, hoses, and nozzles.
  • Mix coatings per manufacturer instructions and environmental conditions.
  • Verify wet and dry film thickness (WFT/DFT) to ensure compliance.
  • Maintain proper containment, cleanliness, and environmental controls.
  • Follow OSHA, SSPC, and shipyard safety protocols including confined space procedures.
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and report maintenance needs.
  • Collaborate with QA/QC inspectors to ensure work meets contract requirements.

Qualifications & Certifications:
Required:
  • Valid SSPC C7 Abrasive Blaster Certification.
  • Valid SSPC C14 Coating Application Specialist or SSPC C12 Spray Application Certification.
  • Minimum 3 years marine or industrial blasting/painting experience.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment physical, drug screening, and respirator fit test.
  • Knowledge of SSPC surface prep standards (SP-1 through SP-10).
  • Understanding of coating mixing ratios, application conditions, and data sheets.
Preferred:
  • Prior Navy, commercial shipyard, or offshore marine project experience.

Working Conditions:
  • Work performed in dry dock, pier side, shop, and onboard vessels.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, fumes, confined spaces, and inclement weather.
  • Use of PPE required: respirators, blast hoods, Tyvek suits, safety gear.
  • May require working at heights or outside standard hours.

Physical Requirements:
  • Lift up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Prolonged standing, bending, stooping, and ladder climbing.
  • Tolerance for dusty, noisy, and high-temperature conditions.
