Position Description:
CGI is seeking a Senior VMware Virtualization Support Engineer who will be a key member of the Americas Infrastructure Virtualization team, providing advanced operational support, platform maintenance, incident management, and continuous improvement for the enterprise VMware virtualization environment.
The role supports a highly available, business-critical virtualization platform currently based on VMware Cloud Foundation 8 (VCF 8) and will actively participate in the planned migration and transition to VMware Cloud Foundation 9 (VCF 9).
Working as part of a regional and global infrastructure support organization, the engineer is responsible for maintaining platform stability, availability, performance, security, and operational readiness. The position provides Tier 2/3 technical support, participates in the 24×7×365 on-call rotation, troubleshoots complex infrastructure incidents, performs lifecycle and patching activities, and contributes to automation and AI-enabled operational improvements.
The environment includes VMware Cloud Foundation, vSphere, NSX-T, vSAN, Aria Operations, vRealize Log Insight (VRLI), vRealize Network Insight (VRNI), and associated enterprise storage and networking technologies.
This position is located in the New York, NY or Jersey City area (Hybrid)
Your future duties and responsibilities:
Platform Support & Maintenance
• Provide Tier 2/3 operational support for the VMware virtualization platform as part of the Americas Infrastructure Virtualization team.
• Maintain the existing VCF 8 environment and participate in the planning, testing, migration, and operational transition to VCF 9.
• Support and maintain VMware technologies including vSphere, NSX-T, vSAN, Aria Operations, VRLI, and VRNI.
• Perform routine platform health checks, troubleshooting, maintenance, configuration changes, and lifecycle management activities.
• Monitor platform availability, capacity, performance, and infrastructure health to ensure services meet established SLAs.
• Work within established architecture, engineering, security, and operational standards.
Incident & Problem Management
• Respond to production incidents and service requests involving VMware virtualization infrastructure.
• Perform advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis for compute, storage, networking, performance, and availability issues.
• Participate in major incident management and collaborate with application, network, storage, security, and other infrastructure teams to restore services.
• Document incidents, root causes, corrective actions, known errors, and operational procedures.
• Identify recurring incidents and contribute to problem-management initiatives designed to eliminate or reduce repeat failures.
• Escalate complex product issues to VMware/Broadcom and other technology vendors as required.
VCF 8 to VCF 9 Migration
• Participate as a technical member of the team responsible for migrating the existing VCF 8 platform to VCF 9.
• Support readiness assessments, compatibility reviews, upgrade planning, testing, implementation, and post-migration validation.
• Assist with migration activities while minimizing service disruption and maintaining compliance with enterprise security standards.
• Validate platform health, application connectivity, performance, monitoring, backup, and operational processes following migration activities.
• Develop and update operational documentation and support procedures for the VCF 9 environment.
Monitoring & Capacity Management
• Configure, maintain, and tune monitoring thresholds, alarms, dashboards, and reporting within Aria Operations, VRLI, and VRNI.
• Perform proactive monitoring to identify capacity, availability, latency, and performance issues before they impact production services.
• Review infrastructure utilization and recommend VM rightsizing and capacity optimization opportunities.
• Support capacity planning across compute, memory, storage, and network resources.
• Participate in the implementation of anomaly detection, predictive monitoring, and intelligent capacity-management capabilities.
Automation & Operational Improvement
• Develop and maintain automation using PowerCLI, PowerShell, Python, Ansible, Terraform, and VMware APIs.
• Automate repetitive operational activities including health checks, provisioning, patching, reporting, configuration validation, and lifecycle management.
• Maintain and improve automated operational runbooks and remediation procedures.
• Contribute to self-healing capabilities for well-understood infrastructure events where automated remediation can be implemented safely.
• Explore and implement practical AI-assisted operations capabilities, including incident triage, alert correlation, log analysis, knowledge retrieval, and root cause analysis.
• Continuously identify opportunities to reduce manual effort and improve platform reliability and support efficiency.
Change, Release & Lifecycle Management
• Participate in change and release management activities for the VMware virtualization environment.
• Perform VMware software upgrades, firmware updates, security patches, and infrastructure maintenance through approved change processes.
• Develop implementation, validation, rollback, and recovery procedures for infrastructure changes.
• Ensure changes comply with enterprise standards, security requirements, and VMware recommended practices.
• Participate in maintenance windows and after-hours implementation activities when required.
Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity
• Support disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution for workloads hosted on the virtualization platform.
• Participate in scheduled DR exercises and document results, issues, and remediation actions.
• Support platform capabilities required to meet established business RPO and RTO requirements, including critical workload targets of RPO ≤ 5 seconds and RTO ≤ 15 minutes, where applicable.
• Maintain operational documentation and recovery procedures required to support business continuity.
Operational Support
• Participate in the 24×7 on-call support rotation for production virtualization services.
• Perform morning and end-of-day platform health checks using dashboards, monitoring platforms, and automated scripts.
• Investigate infrastructure alerts and take appropriate corrective or escalation actions.
• Support OS, hypervisor, firmware, storage, and VMware platform patching activities.
• Maintain accurate support documentation, knowledge articles, troubleshooting procedures, and operational runbooks.
• Provide technical guidance and knowledge transfer to other members of the infrastructure support team.
Collaboration & Service Management
• Work closely with application owners and infrastructure teams to understand requirements and support the delivery of standardized virtual infrastructure services.
• Collaborate with networking, storage, security, backup, cloud, and hardware teams to troubleshoot cross-platform issues.
• Coordinate with VMware/Broadcom and other technology vendors for technical support, product defects, upgrades, and complex incidents.
• Work with regional and global IT teams to maintain consistent platform standards and operational processes.
• Support the virtualization service catalogue and provide input into service consumption, capacity, cost, and performance reviews.
Reporting & Governance
• Provide operational reporting covering platform availability, incidents, capacity, performance, SLA compliance, patching, and infrastructure health.
• Contribute to dashboards and metrics used by infrastructure management to evaluate service performance.
• Track automation benefits, operational improvements, capacity savings, and incident trends.
• Participate in operational reviews, problem-management meetings, change reviews, and service improvement initiatives.
Required qualifications to be successful in this role:
• 10+ years of overall IT experience, with significant experience supporting enterprise infrastructure environments.
• 5-7+ years of hands-on VMware experience supporting large-scale environments using technologies such as vSphere 8+, VMware Cloud Foundation, NSX-T, and vSAN.
• Hands-on experience operating and troubleshooting production VMware environments.
• Experience participating in VMware platform upgrades or migrations, preferably involving VMware Cloud Foundation.
• Experience supporting an existing VCF 8 environment and/or migration to VCF 9 is highly desirable.
• Strong troubleshooting skills across virtualization, compute, storage, networking, and operating-system layers.
• Strong automation skills using technologies such as PowerCLI, PowerShell, Python, Ansible, Terraform, and VMware APIs.
• Hands-on experience with Aria Operations, VRLI, and VRNI or equivalent monitoring, logging, and network-visibility platforms.
• Solid understanding of enterprise storage technologies, including SAN, NAS, iSCSI, vSAN, and platforms such as Dell/EMC, Isilon, Pure Storage, and NetApp.
