Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

The main difference between a Sr Tooling Engineer and a Manufacturing Engineer lies in their focus areas. The Sr Tooling Engineer specializes in designing and developing tooling to support manufacturing processes, while the Manufacturing Engineer focuses on optimizing overall production efficiency. Both roles often require similar educational backgrounds and are used within the same industries, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

What are Sr Tooling Engineers?

Sr Tooling Engineers are experienced professionals responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the tools, dies, molds, and fixtures used in manufacturing processes. They collaborate with engineering and production teams to ensure tooling solutions meet quality, safety, and efficiency standards. Senior Tooling Engineers also lead projects, troubleshoot tooling-related issues, and mentor junior engineers. Their expertise helps optimize manufacturing workflows and reduce production costs.

What are some common challenges faced by Sr Tooling Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Sr Tooling Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing tight project timelines, optimizing tool designs for manufacturability, and troubleshooting complex production issues. To address these, it's important to maintain clear communication with cross-functional teams, stay updated on the latest industry technologies, and proactively engage in continuous improvement initiatives. Collaborating closely with design, production, and quality teams can help identify potential issues early and develop effective solutions, ensuring smooth project delivery and high-quality outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr Tooling Engineer, and why are they important?

A Sr Tooling Engineer requires expertise in tool design, manufacturing processes, materials science, and typically a bachelor’s degree in mechanical or manufacturing engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and experience with industry standards and certifications like Six Sigma are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help drive cross-functional teamwork and innovation. These competencies are essential for delivering high-quality tooling solutions that improve production efficiency and product quality.

Job description

About Radiant

Radiant is an El Segundo, CA-based startup building the world’s first mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors. The company’s first reactor, Kaleidos, is a 1-megawatt, fail-safe microreactor that can be transported anywhere power is needed and run for up to 5 years without refueling. Portable nuclear power with rapid-deploy capability can replace similar-sized diesel generators and provide critical asset support for hospitals, data centers, remote sites, and military bases. Radiant’s unique, practical approach to nuclear development leverages modern software engineering to rapidly deliver safe, factory-built microreactors that use existing, well-qualified materials. Founded in 2020, Radiant is on track to test its first reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory this summer, with initial customer deliveries beginning in 2028.

About the Role

Radiant is seeking a highly motivated Senior Tooling Engineer who will be working closely with design engineers and the manufacturing team to develop and innovate custom tooling to build and assemble our microreactor system. You will be part of the early team that develops production tooling for the factory that will mass produce, fuel, and refuel Kaleidos.

Desired Qualifications & Skills:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in mechanical, manufacturing, or other related engineering discipline.

  • Proficiency with both “hand calc” analytical methods and higher fidelity finite element-based analysis methods.

  • Self-motivated with strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills.

  • Experience with custom machine design; electromechanical systems, motors, actuators, linear rails, bearings, lifting/rigging, etc.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with design and operations teams.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as necessary to achieve company goals.

  • Must work 100% onsite at El Segundo HQ.
