Sr Design Engineer information

What is a Sr Design Engineer?

Sr Design Engineers are experienced professionals responsible for leading the design and development of products, systems, or components within an engineering team. They oversee the design process, ensuring projects meet technical specifications, regulatory standards, and budget constraints. Sr Design Engineers often mentor junior engineers, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and use advanced software tools for modeling and analysis. Their expertise helps drive innovation and ensures the successful delivery of complex engineering projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr Design Engineer?

To thrive as a Sr Design Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or electrical engineering, advanced problem-solving skills, and a relevant engineering degree, often with several years of industry experience. Expertise in CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and familiarity with manufacturing processes are typically required, along with certifications like PE or Six Sigma being advantageous. Leadership, collaboration, and effective communication are vital soft skills for guiding teams and managing complex projects. These competencies are crucial to ensure innovative, reliable designs that meet technical requirements and project goals.

What are some common challenges faced by Sr Design Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Sr Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing innovative design solutions with cost and manufacturability constraints, managing multiple projects simultaneously, and ensuring effective communication across multidisciplinary teams. To address these challenges, it's important to stay current with industry tools and best practices, regularly collaborate with manufacturing and quality departments, and prioritize clear documentation. Developing strong project management and interpersonal skills can also help streamline workflow and reduce project bottlenecks.

What is the difference between Sr Design Engineer vs Design Engineer?

Work EnvironmentDesign teams, R&D departments, manufacturing settingsDesign teams, project-based environments, product development
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, aerospace, automotive, electronicsSimilar industries, often as entry to mid-level roles

The main difference between a Sr Design Engineer and a Design Engineer lies in experience and responsibility. A Sr Design Engineer typically has more years of experience, takes on complex projects, and may mentor junior staff. In contrast, a Design Engineer is often in an earlier career stage, focusing on executing design tasks under supervision. Both roles are essential in product development, but the Sr Design Engineer plays a leadership role in design innovation and project management.

How much does a senior design engineer get paid?

A senior design engineer's average salary typically ranges from $80,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and location. They often have advanced skills in CAD software and engineering principles, which can influence compensation levels.

Job description

Req ID:519932

At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility, we offer our diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, 80,000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.

Could you be the full-time Digital Engineer in Saint Bruno we’re looking for?

Your future role

Take on a new challenge and apply your technical and leadership expertise in a cutting-edge field. You’ll work alongside collaborative and resourceful teammates.

You'll play a key role in ensuring the seamless integration and testing of our digital mobility solutions. Day-to-day, you’ll work closely with teams across the business (such as project management, architecture, and engineering teams), support the design and implementation of testing environments, and much more.

You’ll specifically take care of planning and executing end-to-end tests, but also support project management activities and architectural design reviews.

We’ll look to you for:

  • Designing and implementing the test environment, including specifying tools, data, and configurations needed for comprehensive testing

  • Troubleshooting and resolving issues within the test environment

  • Planning test cases and datasets to ensure thorough testing

  • Validating digital integration, data interfaces, and overall performance alignment with customer requirements

  • Identifying defects and ensuring their resolution in collaboration with project teams

  • Supporting the planning and execution of architecture reviews across project milestones

  • Providing progress updates, identifying issues and risks related to deliverables, and supporting project management activities

  • Managing inputs and outputs with other subsystems during design and validation phases

All about you

We value passion and attitude over experience. That’s why we don’t expect you to have every single skill. Instead, we’ve listed some that we think will help you succeed and grow in this role:

  • Degree in engineering or equivalent professional experience

  • At least one year of experience in a managerial role within an operational environment, particularly in the context of digital solutions

  • Hands-on experience in one or more software development phases such as software development, hardware-software integration, etc.

  • Experience working with multinational companies and diverse corporate cultures

  • Familiarity with Alstom’s working methods for effective process execution (preferred)

  • System engineering certification (preferred)

  • Practical knowledge of safety management systems and safety risk assessment (preferred)

  • Strong knowledge of railway products and systems

  • Excellent leadership, coordination, and communication skills, with the ability to orchestrate cross-functional activities in a multicultural and multi-tiered environment (system and subsystems)

  • Results-oriented mindset with a strong ability to manage technical risks

  • Team spirit, rigor, autonomy, and a capacity to learn complex technical subjects quickly

  • Fluency in French and English

  • Knowledge of an additional language is an asset for collaborating with international partners, suppliers, colleagues, and clients

Things you’ll enjoy

Join us on a life-long transformative journey – the rail industry is here to stay, so you can grow and develop new skills and experiences throughout your career. You’ll also:

  • Enjoy stability, challenges, and a long-term career free from boring daily routines

  • Work with new security standards for rail signalling

  • Collaborate with transverse teams and helpful colleagues

  • Contribute to innovative projects

  • Utilise our dynamic and inclusive working environment

  • Steer your career in whatever direction you choose across functions and countries

  • Benefit from our investment in your development, through award-winning learning

  • Progress towards senior roles in system integration or project management

  • Benefit from a fair and dynamic reward package that recognises your performance and potential, plus comprehensive and competitive social coverage (life, medical, pension)

Knowledge of a language other than French is an asset to facilitate communication with our partners, suppliers, colleagues, and international clients. In Quebec, French remains the primary working language of our company.

You don’t need to be a train enthusiast to thrive with us. We guarantee that when you step onto one of our trains with your friends or family, you’ll be proud. If you’re up for the challenge, we’d love to hear from you!

Important to note

As a global business, we’re an equal-opportunity employer that celebrates diversity across the 63  countries we operate in. We’re committed to creating an inclusive workplace for everyone.
