Job Description
SAIC is seeking a skilled and motivated Systems Engineer - Database (MS SQL Server) to join our team in support of an on-premises enterprise IT environment. The primary focus of this role is the operational management, maintenance, and enhancement of MS SQL Server databases to ensure enterprise IT systems operate efficiently, securely, and reliably. The successful candidate will be responsible for database performance tuning, disaster recovery planning, troubleshooting, and patching to maintain systems critical to national security missions.
Working within a complex infrastructure of virtualized Windows servers, enterprise-level MS SQL Server databases, and networking systems, the Systems Engineer - Database will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement reliable, high-performing database solutions.
All work must be performed on-site in Springfield, VA.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage, configure, and maintain MS SQL Server database environments to ensure optimal performance, availability, and scalability
  • Perform database administration tasks, including backups, restores, and disaster recovery planning using tools such as SQL Server Maintenance Plans or SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to database availability, performance, and security
  • Implement database patches, updates, and upgrades while minimizing impact to operational workloads
  • Optimize database queries and parameters to improve speed and performance across enterprise applications
  • Develop and maintain processes for monitoring, reporting, and troubleshooting MS SQL Server databases and the associated infrastructure
  • Collaborate with application developers, system administrators, and network engineers to ensure database integrations and deployments meet project and system performance requirements
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including configuration guides, troubleshooting procedures, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and system architecture diagrams
  • Ensure databases comply with established security practices and frameworks, such as RMF and NIST standards
    Implement security policies and manage database access controls to maintain integrity and confidentiality

Qualifications
Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree

Certifications (CWF Requirements):
  • Candidates must satisfy Cybersecurity Workforce Framework (CWF) ID 421 (System Administrator - Intermediate Level) requirements, as outlined by Navy COOL
    • This requirement can be met by possessing one or more of the following qualifying certifications:
      • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate
      • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate
      • Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA)
      • CompTIA Server+
      • CompTIA Security+ CE
    • OR This requirement can be met through:
      • A Bachelor's Degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, IT, or a related field

Experience:
  • 5-9 years of professional experience managing and supporting enterprise-level MS SQL Server database environments

Technical Skills:
  • Expertise in database administration capabilities, including performance tuning, high availability configurations, clustering, and disaster recovery solutions (e.g., SQL Server AlwaysOn)
  • Proficiency in managing enterprise Windows-based systems, including Active Directory, and integration with databases
  • Knowledge of database backup and restore processes using native tools or third-party services
  • Experience using monitoring and troubleshooting tools, such as SQL Profiler, Performance Monitor, or Splunk
  • Familiarity with system security frameworks, policies, and compliance standards, such as RMF, NIST 800-53, and DoD 8510.01

Preferred Certifications (In Addition to CWF Requirements):
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate
  • Microsoft Certified: Database Administrator Associate
  • CompTIA Security+ CE

Clearance Requirement:
  • Active TS/SCI clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI with Poly

Work Environment and Notes:
  • On-Site Work: All work must be conducted on-site in Springfield, VA
  • Program Scope: Supports on-premises enterprise IT environments, including virtualized Windows servers, MS SQL Server databases, and networking layers
  • Subcontractor Role: Responsibilities and compensation vary based on the subcontract agreement, with a competitive salary aligned to market rates and role-specific requirements
