Job description

As Metrics is bidding to support the Veterans Health Administration, we are looking for a Data Specialist to support the National Telestroke Program. This position is fully remote.

The Veterans Health Administration's National Telestroke Program (NTSP) connects VA facilities with remote vascular neurologists through telehealth technology so Veterans get timely, high-quality acute stroke care. The program's Informatics function provides its technology and data backbone, and its data environment recently moved from on-premises to a cloud platform hosted on Databricks while continuing to exchange data with VA's enterprise Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW) and operational systems.

You will build and maintain the data pipelines that move data between VA's enterprise Corporate Data Warehouse and the program's cloud Databricks workgroup, and deliver analysis-ready datasets the Government's in-house Informatics team consumes for Power BI and other reporting. If you have built production ETL/ELT in PySpark and Spark SQL and implemented patient-matching or record-linkage logic, we want to talk to you.

What you'll do

  • Build, test, implement, enhance, maintain, and support data pipelines in the cloud OCC_Telestroke workgroup (Databricks) and other analytical and operational systems that extract from the enterprise CDW and deliver reliable, analysis-ready datasets
  • Design and maintain bidirectional data movement between the enterprise CDW, the cloud workgroup, and operational systems, including source-of-truth logic, conflict resolution, and synchronization integrity
  • Develop and maintain ETL/ELT logic in SQL/Spark SQL, PySpark, and Python as reproducible, version-controlled, auditable code rather than manual one-off pulls
  • Implement patient-matching and record-linkage logic using multiple identifiers, with auditing of prior matches, to prevent data-integrity failures
  • Harmonize datasets across facilities and sources (consistent keys, date ranges, formats, and naming conventions) and implement automated validation checks at extraction and delivery, including missingness reporting and range and impossible-value checks
  • Develop data flow maps identifying inputs, outputs, data sources, update frequency, and internal controls
  • Deliver clean, well-modeled data the Government's in-house Informatics team can consume for Power BI or other analytical reporting platforms
  • Write administrator and technical documentation for all pipelines and code, develop data administrator training materials, and support transfer to the Government at task order conclusion
  • Contribute to the transition plan and to weekly task order management meetings, and provide ongoing support, maintenance, and enhancements to everything you build

What you need — minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and eight (8) years of relevant experience — OR thirteen (13) years of relevant experience without a degree
  • Able to obtain a favorable VA Tier 2 (moderate risk) background investigation, including fingerprint adjudication, a credit check, and verification of your degree
  • Ability to work with Protected Health Information (PHI) and other VA sensitive information under Federal privacy and security rules

Before you apply: your resume needs to show the eight years (or thirteen without the degree), and it needs to name the tools. The Government scores resumes on the preferred stack below, so if you have used Azure Databricks, PySpark, Spark SQL, or Power BI, say so by name and say where.

Nice to have

  • Azure Databricks, PySpark, Python, SQL/Spark SQL, and Power BI, including Power BI report development using Databricks Spark SQL
  • Non-Microsoft automation platforms, which might include Salesforce and Red Hat products
  • Prior work inside VA or VHA, or in a similarly complex environment such as a large integrated healthcare system or a Federal health agency
  • Experience with VA's Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW) or VINCI
  • Record-linkage or master patient index work in a clinical or claims setting

Schedule and work environment

Fully remote; work is performed at remotely. Tasks are performed within the program's operating window of 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, excluding Federal holidays.

Who does well here

Ownership — when a Telestroke site cannot connect, you own it until it is fixed and documented. Precision, because a permissions change on a SharePoint site work has to be right the first time. A sense of urgency, since the sites you support are running acute stroke care.
