What is an SPT?

SPT stands for Standard Penetration Test, which is a common geotechnical investigation method used to determine the properties of soil. SPTs involve driving a hollow tube into the ground at the bottom of a borehole and counting the number of hammer blows required to penetrate a certain depth. The test provides valuable information about soil density, strength, and composition, which helps engineers design safe foundations for buildings and other structures. SPT results are widely used in construction, civil engineering, and environmental studies.
