Here's a summary of responsibilities:
Under the direction and supervision of the Lead Health Care Services Provider (HCSP), provide injury and illness examination, evaluation, diagnosis, rehabilitation case management, and treatment of athlete health care in support of sustained excellence. Upon assignment, serve in the capacity of Sports Medicine staff at USOPC- and/or NGB-sponsored events.
The HCSP is clinically competent, maintains State licensure in Physical Therapy as well as a certificate of additional qualification as a Sport or Orthopedic Certified Specialist from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS). The HCSP has substantial experience and clinical acumen in musculoskeletal diagnostics and management strategies for elite athlete populations, multidisciplinary care coordination, provision of emergency medical care for high acuity injuries, superior oral and written communication skills, high competency in creating and completing medical documentation, and experience in clinical research. The HCSP initiates and leads communication with partners in the USOPC sport performance and sports medicine teams, applicable NGBs, and across USOPC departments.
Here’s how you’ll have an impact:
- Perform as an HCSP for athletes and NGBs as assigned. Health care includes reviewing health histories, providing emergency care, examination and evaluation of injuries and illnesses, developing and implementing individualized evidence-based treatment and rehabilitation programs using active care, therapeutic exercise and modalities, neuromuscular re-education, manual therapy, and other appropriate interventions.
- Serve as an integrated member of the High Performance multidisciplinary care team, collaborating and maintaining relationships with clinical staff, psychological services, sports dietitians, strength and conditioning coaches, NGBs, coaches and other performance personnel to optimize athlete health, availability, well-being and performance.
- Participate in interdisciplinary athlete management, communicating effectively regarding injury status, rehabilitation progression, readiness, and return to sport recommendations while maintaining appropriate medical confidentiality.
- Deliver comprehensive athlete care across the continuum of injury management, including performance enhancement, injury prevention, acute care, rehabilitation, and return to training, sport and performance. Provide medical coverage for practices, training camps, and events as assigned.
- Develop, implement, and progress individualized rehabilitation programs using evidence-informed clinical decision making, objective testing, functional performance assessments, and sport-specific progression criteria to facilitate safe and effective return to training and performance.
- Provide for patient care activities as needed in accordance with the licensure, scope of practice, standards and functions of his/her individual professional licensure, job description, and standards for appropriate practice, including clinical competency, documentation, and referral.
- Work in cooperation with USOPC Sports Medicine leadership to develop and deliver effective and efficient provisions of clinical services and operations. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and operational projects that enhance athlete care and organizational effectiveness as needed.
- Remain current with emerging evidence, best practices, and advancements in sports rehabilitation, injury prevention, and performance optimization through ongoing professional development and continuing education.
- Record and enter athlete medical data into the Electronic Health Record system in a timely manner for maintenance of athlete medical records while maintaining compliance with medical privacy laws.
- Operate and maintain equipment as permitted by and in accordance with local and state regulations.
- Maintain active licensure and compliance with medical/legal requirements for the States of employment. Maintain compliance with IOC, IPC, USOPC, WADA, USADA, SafeSport, and the Olympic Medical Code to provide for the protection and maximization of sports performance from each athlete.
- Perform additional duties as assigned or required.
Here are the skills and experience you'll need to be effective:
- Master’s degree in Physical Therapy
- Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy preferred
- State Licensure for state of employment
- ABPTS-Certified Sports or Orthopedics Clinical Specialist (SCS or OCS)
- Current Health Care Provider CPR and AED certification
- Dual licensure in Athletic Training preferred.
- Emergency medical training (EMT) or Emergency Medical Response for the Athlete (ERA) preferred.
- Certified Strength and Conditioning Certification (CSCS), Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES), USA Weightlifting Coach (USAW) or other performance certification preferred.
- Documented experience working with elite, high-performance athletes.
- 5 years of clinical experience
- 3 years of sports medicine experience after licensure
- Documented manual therapy experience.
- Electronic Health Record experience preferred
- On-field sports medicine experience required
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and computer programs
- Must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population including, but not limited to, athletes, coaches, administrative staff, physicians, volunteers, and other medical personnel.
- Knowledge in the areas of:
- Injury/illness prevention and treatment
- Rehabilitation of athletic injuries and post-surgical care
- Performance enhancement
- Emergency medicine skills
- Blood Borne Pathogen Training
- Athletic taping

- Hiring pay range $100,000 - $115,000 per year.
- This Full-Time, Exempt position is intended to work 40 hours per week.
- Bonus: This position will be eligible for the Annual Incentive Award Program, which has a 15% target. The USOPC may change or eliminate this program at any time at its sole discretion.
