What are some common challenges faced by a Spitzer operator in maintaining and calibrating infrared telescopic instruments?

As a Spitzer operator, one of the primary challenges is ensuring the accuracy of infrared data captured by the telescope, which involves regular calibration against known celestial sources and careful monitoring of instrument sensitivity. Operators must also be responsive to anomalies or technical issues that can arise due to the remote nature of space-based telescopes, often requiring collaboration with engineers and scientists to troubleshoot problems quickly. Additionally, working within a team structure, Spitzer operators coordinate observation schedules and data analysis tasks, balancing priorities across multiple research projects.

What is a Spitzer?

Spitzer astronomers are scientists who work with data from the Spitzer Space Telescope, a NASA mission that observed the universe in infrared light from 2003 to 2020. They analyze images and spectra to study objects such as stars, galaxies, exoplanets, and dust clouds that are often invisible in visible light. Their work helps expand our understanding of the formation and evolution of cosmic structures, and they often collaborate with other astronomers to interpret findings from Spitzer alongside data from other telescopes.
