Job description

The DOT Hostler is a critical operator within our yard and dock ecosystem, ensuring the safe, precise, and continuous movement of trailers and freight that keeps operations flowing. This role exists to eliminate bottlenecks across loading, staging, and transport zones by executing high-accuracy trailer positioning and material handling.
Success in this role means maintaining a disciplined, safety-first yard environment while enabling faster turn times, improved dock productivity, and seamless coordination across operations. You directly influence throughput, on-time performance, and the reliability of our logistics network. What you'll do
1. Execute yard and trailer operations with precision

  • Shuttle empty and loaded trailers efficiently across dock doors, staging areas, and parking lots
  • Interpret work orders and verbal instructions to prioritize trailer movements in real time
  • Ensure accurate placement of equipment to support loading schedules and dock flow
2. Support freight handling and material movement
  • Load, unload, and transport freight using forklifts, hoists, and other industrial equipment
  • Move materials between dock areas, storage zones, and trailers with accuracy and care
  • Stack, bundle, palletize, and secure freight for safe movement and storage
3. Maintain safety, compliance, and equipment integrity
  • Operate in full compliance with DOT standards, safety protocols, and hazardous material handling requirements
  • Conduct routine checks and maintain a clean, organized work environment
  • Identify and proactively address safety risks, equipment issues, or inefficiencies
4. Enable operational efficiency
  • Partner closely with dock supervisors and operations teams to align on priorities
  • Support tow operators and assist in maintaining smooth yard flow
  • Balance multiple tasks and shifting priorities without compromising safety or accuracy
5. Contribute to team performance and accountability
  • Participate in team initiatives focused on productivity, safety, and operational improvement
  • Apply sound judgment in dynamic environments with varying structure
  • Communicate clearly and consistently with cross-functional stakeholders
What you bring
  • Valid CDL with a clean driving record that meets DOT standards
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical and pre-employment drug screening
  • High school diploma or GED; or 1-3 months of related experience/training, or equivalent combination
  • Proven ability to safely operate forklifts and industrial equipment
  • Hazardous Materials training and certification
  • Strong working knowledge of safety protocols, operating procedures, and compliance requirements
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, manuals, and operational instructions
  • Comfortable performing basic math calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide)
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and multitask in fast-paced environments
  • Sound judgment and ability to navigate diverse personalities and operational scenarios
How you operate
  • You think in terms of flow, efficiency, and system impact-not just individual tasks
  • You prioritize safety without slowing down execution
  • You take ownership of outcomes and follow through without supervision
  • You remain composed and effective in fast-moving, high-demand environments
  • You communicate clearly and collaborate across operational teams
  • You anticipate needs and act before issues escalate
  • You balance speed with accuracy in everything you do
