Job description

Specimen Collector
Aiken, South Carolina
The specimen Collector is responsible for performing accurate and confidential collection of urine specimens for toxicology testing in accordance with federal, state, and company protocols. This position plays a critical role in maintaining chain of custody, protecting specimen integrity, and ensuring compliance with all applicable toxicology testing standards.
Although the Collector is an employee of the lab, they will be an intricate part of the local physician's office team while working alongside nurses, physicians, and other staff members, but solely performing the duties of the lab collector.
Core Responsibilities
  • Perform urine specimen collection at local client site(s) in accordance with DOT and/or non-DOT protocols
  • Verify donor identity using appropriate documentation (e.g., driver’s license, passport, etc.)
  • Explain collection procedures to donors and ensure their understanding of the process
  • Complete custody and control forms (CCFs) accurately and thoroughly and maintain strict adherence to chain of custody procedures throughout the collection process
  • Secure and package specimens for transport to the toxicology laboratory
  • Document all activities clearly and legibly, including specimen anomalies, donor behavior, and any protocol deviations
  • Ensure collection area is clean, private, and stocked with appropriate supplies
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism with all donors
  • Report any issues or incidents to their manager immediately
  • Follow all HIPAA, CLIA, OSHA, and laboratory policies regarding privacy, safety, and infection control
  • Work will be performed in a clinical setting and exposure to bodily fluids is expected; PPE is provided
  • Dress according to office policy/protocol and maintain a professional appearance.
  • Being on time at the start of clinic is critical
Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Prior experience in specimen collection role preferred, but we are willing to train motivated individuals
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Knowledge, Skills, amp; Abilities
  • Basic computer and technology skills required
  • Must be comfortable handling urine, blood, and saliva
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain composure in a fast-paced or occasionally stressful environment
  • Comfortable working independently and traveling between multiple locations
  • Punctuality and the ability to manage time effectively and adapt to variable schedules
