What is a specimen accessioner?

Specimen Accessioners are laboratory professionals responsible for receiving, labeling, and processing biological samples such as blood, urine, or tissue specimens. They ensure that each specimen is accurately identified and entered into the laboratory information system, facilitating proper tracking and testing. Their work is crucial for maintaining specimen integrity and supporting laboratory operations. Specimen Accessioners often interact with couriers, healthcare providers, and lab technicians to resolve discrepancies or clarify orders.

What does a specimen accessioner do?

A specimen accessioner or processor works closely with other laboratory personnel to catalog patient specimens, such as blood, urine or tissue samples, for review. Those samples are processed and examined by laboratory professionals, doctors, and nurses for diagnosis and treatment. While most entry-level positions don’t require experience, a high school diploma is one of the primary requirements for a career in this industry. More specialized specimen accessioner positions require a post-secondary degree or additional certifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a specimen accessioner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Specimen Accessioner, you need attention to detail, organizational skills, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS), barcode scanners, and data entry software is commonly required. Strong communication, time management, and the ability to work accurately under pressure are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure the accurate processing and tracking of specimens, which is critical for timely and reliable laboratory results.

What are some common challenges faced by specimen accessioners, and how can they be managed effectively?

Specimen Accessioners often encounter challenges such as managing a high volume of samples, ensuring accurate data entry, and maintaining specimen integrity under tight deadlines. Attention to detail is essential to avoid mislabeling or processing errors, which can impact patient care. Effective time management and strong communication with laboratory colleagues can help address these challenges, and many labs provide comprehensive training and clear protocols to support new team members.
