SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION: Cleans, wraps, sterilizes, stores and distributes equipment, supplies and instruments used in patient care.

TITLES SUPERVISED:NoneTOTAL NUMBER FTEs DIRECTLY/INDIRECTLY SUPERVISED: 20 -30PURPOSE of POSITION: Responsible for facilitating the procurement; ordering; receipt and maintenance of all instrumentation within Sterile Processing and Distribution; the Operating Room and additional areas of the Medical Center as appropriate. Ensures work performed and records kept conform to department; hospital; and regulatory agency standards. Collaborates with Supervisor to coordinate the activities of all techs within Sterile Processing and Distribution (SPD) to assure on time availability of supplies/instrumentation for surgical procedures. Collaborates with Manager; SPD to assure current processes and practices are evidenced based as related to SPD activities.
REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
·Compliance - Patient Services Staff
Sustain a working understanding of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. Support leadership in Compliance efforts to meet and sustain the regulatory compliance efforts of the department and hospital. Be mindful and judicious in monitoring safety and departmental policies and procedures. Ensure all individual certifications and Safety College requirements are fulfilled in a timely basis. Work with department managers, nurse council and magnet representatives to identify and share safety best practices. Be mindful of CCHMCs processes and compliance with CMS standards and freely communicate safety and compliance concerns to leadership team members.
·Fiscal Responsibility
Demonstrates fiscal and operational accountability. Champions the cost management process and participates in development and implementation of cost management initiatives related to instrumentation. Participates in instrumentation budget projections and fiscal planning.
·Administrative Support
Provides administrative support to management to include reports concerning instrument utilization analysis, turnover, new items received, shortage or overstock of instruments and returned goods.
·Supply and Instrument Management
Collaborates with SPD Manager and Director to plan and prioritize SPD supply and instrumentation management responsibilities. Assists supervisor in troubleshooting supply and instrument issues in the O.R. Maintains suitable back-up instrumentation for quick replacement of broken instruments or instruments requiring repair. Establishes and maintains sharpening schedule for instruments in all services as indicated by data measures established in SPD. Manages timely preventive maintenance for instrumentation and equipment. Demonstrates critical thinking skills, makes decisions based on scientific knowledge, experience and information from appropriate resources. Investigates stabilization challenges with equipment in SPD, identifies concerns, and consults with supervision as needed. Generates and proposes ideas for improvement activities, implements and performs new processes, collects and measures data, develops processes based on performance and communicates results.
·Department Support
Assures policies/protocols for activities in SPD are followed; provides input to protocol/policy formulation and revision as indicated. Assures proper sequence of activity to provide product that consistently meets requirements for sterilization. Monitors best practices to assure optimal quality is delivered in all functions/behaviors relevant to SPD.
·Analysis and Documentation
Investigates sterilization challenges, identifies concerns, and consult with supervision as needed. Completes the biological documentation as required by all accreditation standards and departmental procedures by preparing and running appropriate test packs for appropriate sterilizers. Prepares the biological(s) for placement into appropriate incubators and records appropriate information. Records information required on appropriate records, based on biological records, based on the biological results. Validates recordkeeping in accordance with hospital and regulatory agency requirements (TJC, OSHA).
·Relationship Management
Provides optimal customer service thru efficiency, organization and anticipation on a daily basis. Acts as a liaison. Serves the SPD, Operating Room and Medical Center by coordinating multidisciplinary team decisions and recommendations focusing on customer service needs.
·Department Resource
Acts as a preceptor for new employees. Collaborates with Resource Technicians, Patient Care Facilitators, and OR staff on instrument tray ordering, setup, issue identification and problem solving. Maintains positive environment to assure morale supports retention of qualified staff and that productivity measures are met. Counsels staff when appropriate; is available to assist staff in understanding rules and regulations of employment, managing their work time and encouraging their achievements. Provides instruction for performing non-routine functions.
·Database Management
Maintains correct database for SPM microsystems instrument tracking system. Updates policy/protocol as need indicates. Demonstrates extensive knowledge of departmental computer applications. Assist Perioperative IS with interdepartmental computer software systems. Performs set list production and changes. Knowledgeable of DPC (Doctor Preference Card) access and use in preparing case carts. Notifies Perioperative coordinator and/or team manager when indicated by variances in DPC requirements. Requests new DPC if case request indicate major change. Troubleshoots process improvement opportunities; collaborates with staff, supervisor, and Perioperative teams to assure optimal function of SPD.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Required:
·Completion of Central Service Technical Training course
·Certified Registered Central Service Technician OR International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management (IAHCSM)
·3 years related experience
