Work EnvironmentFocuses on immersive, experiential spaces often involving technology and interactive elementsFocuses on aesthetic, functional interior spaces for residential, commercial, or institutional clients
Industry UsageUsed in creative, tech-driven, experiential, and architectural industriesCommonly used in residential, commercial, hospitality, and healthcare sectors

While both roles involve designing physical spaces, a Spatial Experience Designer emphasizes creating immersive, interactive environments often integrating technology, whereas an Interior Designer focuses on aesthetic and functional interior spaces. The roles overlap in credentials and work environments but differ in scope and focus.

How does a Spatial Experience Designer typically collaborate with other professionals during a project?

Spatial Experience Designers work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, interior designers, engineers, and digital media specialists. Collaboration often involves regular meetings to align on project goals, exchanging feedback on design concepts, and integrating various technical and creative inputs to ensure a cohesive user experience. Effective communication and flexibility are crucial, as priorities may shift based on client feedback or technical constraints. These collaborations not only enhance the final outcome but also provide valuable opportunities for learning and professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Spatial Experience Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Spatial Experience Designer, you need a strong background in architecture, interior design, or environmental design, with proficiency in spatial planning and a relevant degree. Familiarity with 3D modeling software (like SketchUp, Rhino, or Revit), Adobe Creative Suite, and sometimes virtual or augmented reality tools is typically required. Exceptional creativity, user-centric thinking, and strong collaboration and communication skills help differentiate top designers. These skills ensure the creation of engaging, functional spaces that meet user needs and project goals.

What are Spatial Experience Designers?

Spatial Experience Designers are professionals who create and optimize physical environments to enhance how people interact with and experience spaces. They combine elements of architecture, interior design, technology, and user experience design to craft environments that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and emotionally engaging. Their work can be found in museums, retail stores, exhibitions, offices, and public spaces. By understanding human behavior and integrating digital or physical elements, they ensure spaces support the desired activities and evoke the intended feelings from users.

Job description

Impact
As our Senior Engineer in Birmingham, Minneapolis, or working remotely, you will build, manage, and enhance shopper payments systems and compliance services powered by Geo spatial foundation capabilities. Every day you will work on a team of 5-6 engineers to design, develop, test, deploy and maintain application code using Golang, Python, Redis, Postgres, and Kafka in a microservices architecture. You will work with our product and operation teams to solve different challenges in market clearance, supply chain, pricing platform, and any new ventures.
This is a hybrid role that is based in one of our three office hubs: Birmingham, AL; Minneapolis, MN; or San Francisco, CA, so you need to be located near one of these to designate as your home office.
What You'll Need to Be Successful
  • You have 5+ years of software development experience with a programming language like Golang (preferred), Python, Java, or C/C++.
  • You have experience designing, developing, testing (unit/integration/etc.), deploying, and maintaining backend REST API services with a strong focus on performance and latency.
  • You are comfortable working with SQL databases (Postgres preferred).
  • You actively participate in the design process to build efficient, scalable, and maintainable architecture.
  • You have experience diagnosing and solving complex technical problems and performance bottlenecks using data.
  • You take ownership of production services, ensuring their reliability and performance, and are willing to participate in on-call production support rotation.
  • You collaborate effectively with fellow engineers, product managers, and partner teams to deliver impactful solutions.
  • You are self-driven and outcome-oriented - you care about delivering value more than just shipping features.
  • You are passionate about learning, mentoring, and helping others grow.
  • You have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • You have experience designing, developing, and maintaining systems that integrate with third-party services.
  • You have optimized backend systems for latency, performance, and scalability.

AI/LLM Familiarity:
  • Experience integrating LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini) into applications.
  • Design and implement tools that allow AI models to interact securely with our backend services, ensuring the LLM has the right context to perform tasks.
  • Familiarity with orchestration concepts (Google's ADK, Vercel AI SDK, or custom orchestration).
  • Database Literacy: Comfortable writing SQL queries and interacting with relational databases (Postgres preferred).
  • Engineering Best Practices: Experience with Git version control, CI/CD basics, and writing unit tests.

Nice-to-Have Skills
  • Geo-spatial experience or foundation platform building experience

Pay Range: $95,800 - $170,000
