What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Spatial Analyzer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Spatial Analyzer, you need strong analytical skills in spatial data interpretation, a background in geography or related fields, and proficiency in spatial statistics. Familiarity with GIS software (such as ArcGIS or QGIS), spatial databases, and possibly certifications like GISP are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills enable accurate spatial analysis, clear data visualization, and actionable insights that support informed decision-making in various industries.

What are the typical challenges faced by a Spatial Analyzer when working with large and complex datasets?

Spatial Analyzers often work with massive geospatial datasets that require careful organization, quality control, and advanced analytical techniques. One common challenge is ensuring data accuracy and consistency across multiple sources, which may involve cleaning and standardizing data formats. Additionally, handling the computational demands of processing and visualizing large datasets can require familiarity with specialized GIS software and high-performance computing resources. Collaborating with other team members, such as GIS technicians and project managers, is essential to ensure that analyses align with project goals and client needs.

What is a Spatial Analyzer?

A Spatial Analyzer is a professional who uses specialized software and measurement tools to analyze, model, and interpret spatial data, often for purposes such as surveying, construction, manufacturing, or scientific research. They work with three-dimensional data to ensure accuracy in positioning and alignment of objects or structures. Spatial Analyzers help industries maintain quality control and optimize processes by providing precise spatial measurements and analysis. Their work often involves using laser trackers, coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), and other advanced metrology technologies.

What is the difference between Spatial Analyzer vs Geospatial Technician?

AspectSpatial AnalyzerGeospatial Technician
Required CredentialsGIS or surveying certifications, technical trainingGIS certifications, associate degree or technical training
Work EnvironmentSurveying sites, GIS offices, construction projectsGIS labs, field data collection, mapping projects
Industry UsageSurveying, civil engineering, constructionUrban planning, environmental management, mapping

While both roles involve GIS and spatial data, Spatial Analyzer focuses on advanced data analysis and surveying applications, often requiring specialized certifications. Geospatial Technicians primarily handle data collection, mapping, and basic analysis. The roles overlap in industry and work environment but differ in technical complexity and responsibilities.

CACI is looking for a Metrologist to join the team at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Decision's (NSWCCDs) Fabrication Team. In this role, you will utilize high precision measurement equipment (coordinate measurement machines (CMMs), laser tracker equipment, ultrasonic devices, calipers, verniers, electronic protractors, squares, height gauges, depth gauges, indicators, and micrometers) and perform computerized spatial analysis. Calibrate equipment then measure item geometry and spatial relationships. This includes small and large-scale items requiring dimension and tolerance analysis to determine accuracy. Shall restrain items to prevent hog and sag deformation prior to measurement. Provide Tolerance Measurement Study upon completion. Perform preventative and routine maintenance and calibration of measurement equipment as needed and issue calibration
Responsibilities:
  • Prepare measurement reports per customer specifications. Determine if first article parts are acceptable.
  • Implement new innovative practices to promote part accuracy, and proficiency. This may include, but is not limited to, new reporting templates or formats that better facilitate the documentation, reporting, and tracking of precision measurement activities.
  • Use Polyworks Metrology Software to inspect high tolerance finished components designed with minimal fixturing to preform article inspection.
  • Use Polyworks to advise shop management, supervisors, and planners, during the planning and costing phase, on the difficulty, complexity and potential issues which may arise during the inspection process.
  • Analyze and diagnose problems which may arise during the inspection process. Utilize Polyworks or Spatial Analyzer to determine root cause of potential issues and develop methods and processes to ensure that similar issues are reduce or eliminate in future tasks.
  • Use Polyworks software to perform Laser Tracker measurements according to the Model Fabrication Facility policies and standard practices
  • Adhere to the Model Fabrication Facility policies and standard practices were applicable.
  • Design specialized tooling fixtures to be used to support the production of complex machined components
  • Applies knowledge of engineering disciplines in structural design, weld design materials applications and prototype design • Skilled in the interpretation of complex engineered drawings, sketches and verbal communications

Qualifications:
Required:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Familiarity or experience with writing and running PC-DMIS programs.
  • Experience with utilizing high precision measurement equipment (coordinate measurement machines (CMMs), laser tracker equipment, ultrasonic devices, calipers, verniers, electronic protractors, squares, height gauges, depth gauges, indicators, and micrometers) and performing computerized spatial analysis
  • Knowledge of manufacturing trades including industrial and commercial manufacturing processes to contribute to the engineering design and development function
  • Ability to collect and analyze data in test samples and fabrication mockups and apply the data collected to the fabrication of future high cost components and models
  • Experienced in inspecting and dimensionally verifying components and models to ensure compliance with dimension specified in drawings, specifications and control documents.
  • Experience with generating and delivering measurement reports per customer specifications
  • Thorough understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerance practices, including NIST.
  • Ability to read and work from highly detailed drawings and specifications.
  • Desire to learn, ask questions, and take initiative within safety and skills limitations.
