This hands-on, field-based position prepares individuals for a career in communications maintenance through structured classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Trainees learn to install, inspect, andย maintainย telecommunications equipment essential for safe and efficient rail operations.ย

What Should You Knowย 

  • This is a seniority-based union position.ย You willย be requiredย to join the designated union withinย 60 daysย ofย establishingย seniority.ย 

  • You must be available toย workย a 6-dayย (6thย day as standby/on call)ย schedule with one scheduled rest day.ย 

  • Extensive travel may beย required.ย 

  • You must obtain a Class A CDL once hired (training provided if needed).ย 

  • Ability to obtain andย maintainย an FCC license or NABOR certificate isย requiredย afterย hire.ย 

ย 

Trainingย 

Training includes both classroom and field instruction:ย 

  • Training :ย Hires in the Northern Region will report to 1 Week Training in Bellevue, OH,ย hires in the Southern Region will report to our Training Center in McDonough, GA.ย ย 

  • On-the-Job Training (OJT): Up to 1 year to qualify as a Communications Electronic Technician (CET). Possibility to promote sooner based on performance and qualifications.ย 

  • Evaluations: Periodic written and practical assessments.ย 

Successful completion of the training program places trainees on the seniority roster and makes them eligible for promotion to Communications Electronic Technician.ย 

Job Responsibilitiesย 

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and FRA safety regulations.ย 

  • Install,ย maintain, replace, and test communication equipmentย and detectorsย (Southern agreement)ย including:ย radios, digital microwave (MW), RF data link equipment, cables, computers, printers, monitors, telephones, modems, wireless components, security cameras, batteries, connectors, and testing devices.ย 

  • Install andย maintainย VHF radios,ย detectors (Southern agreement),ย data circuits, automatic equipment identification systems, CCTV, radar, speaker systems, and other communication facilities.ย 

  • Cut, splice, and pull cable on ground, poles, and towers.ย 

  • Use trenching equipment to bury cables and equipment.ย 

  • Manage inventory: receive deliveries, retrieve parts, and transport tools/equipment to job sites.ย 

  • Install wiring in offices and field locations.ย 

Qualifications - Requiredย 

  • High school diploma or GED.ย 

  • Valid driver's license.ย 

  • 18 years of age or older.ย 

  • Ability to obtain andย maintainย FCCย (GROL)ย license or NABOR certificate afterย hire.ย 

  • Ability to obtain Class A CDL afterย hire.ย 

  • Ability toย workย a 6-day schedule with one standby day.ย 

Qualifications - Preferredย 

  • FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License.ย 

  • Two-year technical degree or equivalent experience in network management.ย 

  • Experienceย operatingย heavy equipment.ย 

Skills and Abilitiesย 

  • Time management and prioritization.ย 

  • Strong communicationย skills.ย 

  • Ability to multi-task and organize work effectively.ย 

  • Proficiencyย in MS Excel, Outlook, and Word.ย 

Physical and Mental Job Requirementsย

Compensation and Benefitsย 

Training Pay: 75% ofย CET hourly rate ($31.61/hr).ย 

After Promotion: Approximately $8,978.18/month.ย

  • Health insurance (80/20 or 85/15 plan), $20,000 life insurance, and 401(k) eligibility from day one.ย
