Job description

Application Support Analyst

This position is responsible for vendor application support, software application development, support, and technical expertise in support of Financial and Contract Services, Fuel Services, and Gas Operations, which are all part of the Commercial Operations business unit.

The primary responsibilities include working as part of a product-focused team providing technical support for several applications (vendor, desktop, web applications, and services). Support tasks include working with business partners to identify and implement technical solutions. The successful candidate should not only have a strong technical background but excellent communication skills, the desire to learn business concepts and processes, and a passion for software development and support.

This position will work alongside a collaborative TO team to predominantly support the Fuel Services business area technology needs. Work areas will include vendor application support for coal logistics and fuel accounting systems such as Comtrac, Fuel Stock Ledger, Windows server and application support, and support for operational data integrations used in coal inventory, transportation, and settlement processes. Additional areas of support will include gas operations applications such as Gas Measurement Data Collection and other applications within the Financial and Contract Services IT team support area.

This job requires employees to physically report to work Monday - Thursday (4) days a week at the Energy Center in Birmingham, Alabama.  Fridays are generally hybrid unless requested to come into work. Travel is less than 10%.

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Management Information Systems, Engineering, or related degree (preferred)
  • Experience supporting, implementing, testing, and integrating applications (desktop, web applications, and web services) (required)

  1. Experience utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) tools to streamline workflows, improve productivity, and deliver business value preferred.

  2. Strong communication skills including ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders at an appropriate level of detail 

  3. Strong all-around application support and technical skills. 

  • Experience supporting enterprise level vendor business solutions is preferred. Knowledge areas include web applications, desktop applications, windows services, web services, multi-tiered application support, and relational databases including Oracle and SQL Server.
  • Experience supporting application software solutions running on client and Windows Server operating systems preferred.
  • Experience with scripting languages a plus.
  1. Experience using relational databases and SQL. SQL Server, data modeling, etc. is a plus. 

  2. Experience with Source Control, Continuous Integration and Deployment, and developer best practices.  Experience with Git or TeamCity, is a plus.

  3. Experience with Oracle WebLogic a plus.

  4. Real-world experience with full life-cycle development and delivery of enterprise-class software solutions using the latest technologies and platforms and latest software development best practices and techniques a plus.

  5. Ability to take direction and work as a member of a high performing team; overall excellent teamwork skills
