What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a source inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Source Inspector, you need a solid understanding of quality control standards, inspection procedures, and relevant industry regulations, often supported by a technical degree or certification such as ASQ Certified Quality Inspector. Familiarity with measurement tools, inspection software, and documentation systems is typically required. Attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, and effective communication are critical soft skills for ensuring accurate assessments and clear reporting. These skills and qualifications are essential for maintaining product quality, meeting client specifications, and supporting supplier compliance.

What does a source inspector do?

As a source inspector, you act as a field representative for a manufacturing company. Your duties involve inspecting materials and components at the facility that produces them. You work to ensure that parts meet their required specifications, and you do this by looking at blueprints and data. Other responsibilities include taking measurements, performing tests using computer equipment or electrical devices, and assessing other variables such as density, strength, and durability. You document the results of these inspections and create a report for your client or employer. Many source inspectors work in the aerospace industry.

How does a source inspector typically collaborate with suppliers and internal quality teams during the inspection process?

Source Inspectors work closely with suppliers to verify that products and components meet specified quality standards before shipment. They coordinate with internal quality assurance teams to ensure that inspection criteria align with company and industry requirements. Effective communication and documentation are essential, as Source Inspectors often discuss findings, resolve discrepancies, and provide feedback to both the supplier and their own organization. This collaborative approach helps prevent costly quality issues downstream and fosters strong supplier relationships.

What is the difference between Source Inspector vs Quality Control Inspector?

AspectSource InspectorQuality Control Inspector
CertificationsTypically requires NDT certifications, inspection licensesOften requires quality assurance certifications, such as ASQ certifications
Work EnvironmentPrimarily on-site at manufacturing or construction sites, inspecting materials and componentsWorks in manufacturing facilities, labs, or on-site, focusing on product quality
Industry UsageCommon in construction, manufacturing, and oil & gas industriesWidely used across manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and industrial sectors

Quality Control Inspectors concentrate on ensuring finished products meet quality standards. While both roles involve inspection, their scope and focus differ based on the stage of production and specific industry requirements.

Job description

Job Title: Software Engineer – Software Escrow & Source Code Packaging

Job Description

We are seeking a detail-oriented and technically strong Software Engineer to support a dedicated Software Escrow initiative. In this role, you focus on analyzing, preparing, and packaging existing source code for escrow deposits to meet contractual obligations. You do not design new software or develop new features; instead, you work deeply with source code repositories, build structures, Linux environments, and release artifacts. You collaborate closely with multiple product, platform, and engineering teams to explore existing codebases, validate completeness, and ensure that escrow deposits are accurate, well-documented, and compliant with established standards.

Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze existing source code across multiple product repositories to ensure completeness and readiness for escrow deposit.
  • Navigate and operate effectively within Linux-based environments to inspect, build, and package software artifacts.
  • Prepare, organize, and archive source code, scripts, configuration files, and related documentation for escrow submissions.
  • Create and validate escrow deposit packages in accordance with defined processes, contractual obligations, and client expectations.
  • Collaborate with product, platform, release, and integration teams to gather missing components and clarify system dependencies.
  • Verify version histories, tags, and branches using version control systems to ensure accurate and traceable deposits.
  • Support build, release, and patching workflows required to produce escrow-ready artifacts.
  • Document technical findings, packaging steps, repository structures, and dependencies clearly for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with internal standards and procedures related to software delivery, escrow requirements, and audit readiness.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to builds, dependencies, or missing artifacts encountered during escrow preparation.
  • Participate in reviews and audits related to escrow deposits and source code submissions, providing technical input and documentation.
  • Follow established procedures while proactively identifying gaps, risks, or improvements in escrow and source code deposit processes.

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years of engineering experience working with software escrow, source code deposit, or closely related software delivery processes.
  • Hands-on engineering experience in one or more of the following domains: software release engineering or software integration engineering.
  • Excellent Git skills, including working with branches, tags, and version histories.
  • Proficiency with Linux command-line tools, file systems, and archive utilities such as tar, gzip, and zip.
  • Proficiency with Linux patch management and software patching workflows.
  • Experience working with at least two code repository systems, ideally including Perforce.
  • Strong scripting experience in Bash for automation and tooling around builds and packaging.
  • Strong scripting experience in Python for processing artifacts, repositories, and related tasks.
  • Working knowledge of Docker, including container inspection and usage in build and release workflows.
  • Ability to navigate and operate effectively in Linux-based environments for inspection, build, and packaging of software artifacts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across multiple distributed teams.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with cross-functional stakeholders on technical and process-related topics.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Prior experience working directly on software escrow initiatives.
  • Familiarity with source code deposit processes and compliance-driven deliverables.
  • Experience supporting regulated or client-audited software delivery processes.
  • Comfort working with large, complex, and unfamiliar codebases, including legacy systems.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented approach, with a strong focus on accuracy and completeness in documentation and packaging.
  • Ability to follow established procedures while identifying and communicating gaps, risks, or process improvements.
  • Self-motivated mindset with the ability to manage tasks independently while remaining aligned with team objectives.

Work Environment

This is a hybrid role based in Ottawa, with 2–3 days per week onsite in the office and the remaining time working remotely. You work closely with product, platform, release, and integration teams in a collaborative engineering environment focused on networking technology that powers global communications, including internet backbone, cloud connectivity, mobile networks, and critical infrastructure. Daily work involves Linux-based systems, Git and other code repository tools (such as Perforce), Docker, and scripting in Bash and Python to inspect, build, and package source code and release artifacts. The environment emphasizes clear documentation, compliance with internal standards, and readiness for client reviews and audits, offering the opportunity to contribute to highly visible, business-critical software delivery processes.
