Position Summary

The Central Sorting Specialist is responsible for the daily operations of the Central Donation Processing area. This role focuses on sorting, organizing, tagging, and preparing donated items for distribution to Blue Ridge Care thrift shop locations. The Specialist works cooperatively with staff and volunteers to maintain an efficient, safe, and organized workspace that supports the success of our thrift operations and community programs.

Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesDonation Processing & Sorting
  • Sort, organize, and tag donations in accordance with Blue Ridge Care procedures.

  • Process items designated for transfer to warehouse or thrift shop locations.

  • Maintain orderly storage of items remaining in the donation room.

  • Assist in thrift shop locations as needed with sorting and tagging clothing donations.

Operational Support
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and safe donation room and surrounding areas year‑round.

  • Track and maintain supply needs for the donation room, including supplies from the warehouse.

  • Assist the warehouse team with loading and unloading truck deliveries.

Volunteer Coordination
  • Work closely with volunteers, ensuring they have clear direction and the support needed to complete tasks.

  • Provide accommodations as appropriate, including lifting totes or assisting with physical tasks.

Teamwork & Communication
  • Collaborate effectively with staff bringing in, sorting, or transporting products.

  • Communicate and cooperate with the Director of Thrift Operations, Vice President of Community Enterprise & Property Management, and other Blue Ridge Care staff as appropriate.

  • Participate in regular meetings with the supervisor to review donation room operations.

Professionalism & Administrative Responsibilities
  • Act independently and responsibly to complete daily duties.

  • Demonstrate the ability to receive constructive feedback and seek support or guidance as needed.

  • Manage time effectively and ensure accurate, timely entry and approval of payroll in Paycom.

  • Support Blue Ridge Care’s mission, values, and philosophy in all interactions.

  • Maintain positive, professional relationships with the public, volunteers, and staff.

  • Other duties as assigned.
