Job description

Senior Commercial Structural Engineer

Tyndall Engineering & Design Garner, North Carolina, United States (On-site)

Location: Raleigh, NC, Charlotte, NC, or Charleston, SC

Job Type: Full-time (4 - 10 hour days, 3 day weekend)

We are seeking a Senior Commercial Structural Engineer to support one of our TE&D offices. This leader will strengthen quality control through a consistent review process, and drive standardized structural design procedures (SOPs) that unify how we deliver commercial—and supporting residential—projects. The ideal candidate brings strong technical judgment, a high bar for accuracy and constructability, and the ability to mentor teams while serving as a trusted client partner.

This role includes reviewing and sealing structural calculations and construction documents prepared by themselves and production staff, ensuring technical accuracy, consistency, and compliance with applicable codes, professional standards, and TE&D best practices.

Mission

Lead and strengthen TE&D's structural engineering practice in one of the offices by overseeing quality, supervising the team, and standardizing how we deliver residential and commercial structural work.

What Success Looks Like (Performance Objectives)

  • First 3 months: Step into a direct supervisor role for structural production staff—balance workloads, mentor, and set accountability.
  • Ongoing: Become a go-to reviewer across Raleigh, Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and Charleston to improve QA and reduce bottlenecks.
  • By month 6: Build and roll out firmwide SOPs for structural design, calculations, and documentation.
  • Within 12 months: Evaluate current software tools, recommend improvements, and help implement upgrades.
  • Client ownership: Lead technical communication on new projects—support proposals, answer questions during design, and follow up after delivery.

Core Responsibilities

  • Design and review commercial structural systems.
  • Produce and/or oversee calculations and structural drawings; ensure code compliance and consistent standards.
  • Review and mentor engineers/designers; provide clear markups and technical direction.
  • Coordinate with architects, contractors, and owners.
  • Support proposals, scopes, schedules, and staffing plans.
  • Provide construction support as needed (RFIs, submittals, site observations).

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in Civil/Structural Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • PE license (or ability to obtain reciprocity in applicable states).
  • Strong commercial structural engineering experience and code knowledge.
  • Experience reviewing others' work and leading QA/QC.
  • Strong communication, organization, and ability to manage multiple projects.

Preferred

  • multi-office leadership experience, SOP/standardization leadership, renovation/retrofit experience.

Growth Path

This role is intended to grow into a Branch Department Manager, with future potential to become a Regional Department Manager.
