Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Structural Engineer Intern to be based in our Arlington, Virginia office.

Internships are designed to introduce and build essential, hands-on skills that differ from those attained in the academic arena and help to enhance the transition from student to professional. Interns are assigned duties that will provide a broad, well-rounded learning experience within their field of study.

This position is expected to begin in May 2027.

The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to: 

  • Performs specific portions of a broader assignment under the mentoring of an experienced structural engineer.
  • Prepares designs and calculations for a variety of materials, including structural steel, reinforced concrete, and masonry.
  • Evaluate, select, apply standard engineering techniques, and procedures to design structural building systems and members in buildings utilizing hand calculations and the latest structural engineering software.
  • Coordinate with other discipline Engineers as applicable for the continuity of the design process.
  • Perform construction administration duties, including shop drawing review and RFI response preparation.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Candidates must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering with a Structures concentration or in another related engineering field and must have completed at least three of years of study. Candidates who have graduated with a Bachelor's degree and plan to continue with the Master's degree are eligible to apply for these positions. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor's degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.
  • Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship is required for this role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to manage time, and deadlines, keep track of steps in progress, and prioritize tasks.
  • Experience utilizing industry standard software packages such as AutoCAD, REVIT, Bluebeam (pdf editor), or similar.
  • Familiar with structural engineering software such as RAM Structural Systems, ETABS, Enercalc, etc.
  • Comfortable working in a high energy environment with frequent deadlines.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.

  • This position requires a hybrid work schedule which includes in office work in Arlington, VA.  The selected candidate must be available to work in Arlington, VA on a scheduled basis.
