What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solutions Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solutions Architect, you need deep expertise in systems design, software architecture, and IT infrastructure, often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), architecture frameworks, and certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect are highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills help you bridge technical and business needs. These qualities are essential for designing scalable, secure solutions that align with organizational goals and ensure successful project delivery.

How does a Solutions Architect typically collaborate with engineering and sales teams during a project?

Solutions Architects serve as a bridge between technical and non-technical teams. They work closely with engineering teams to ensure that proposed solutions are technically feasible and align with the client's needs, often translating business requirements into actionable technical plans. At the same time, they partner with sales teams to articulate the value of these solutions to clients, participate in client meetings, and address technical questions. Effective communication and collaboration are key, as Solutions Architects need to balance technical constraints with business objectives throughout the project lifecycle.

Can AI replace solution architects?

AI cannot fully replace solution architects, as their role involves complex problem-solving, strategic planning, and stakeholder communication that require human judgment and expertise. AI tools can assist with data analysis and automation but lack the ability to understand nuanced business needs and design comprehensive solutions. Solution architects must adapt by integrating AI and developing skills in emerging technologies to enhance their effectiveness.

Job Description: Sr Director, Business Solution Architecture
Location: New York, New York
Department: Starr Technology Group
Overview:
The Senior Director, Business Solution Architecture is a senior-level, business-facing role responsible for architecting end-to-end solutions for new and evolving commercial insurance products. This role provides holistic ownership of functional and workflow solutioning -from the initial concept to operational delivery - and works closely with business and product partners to define, design, and document business requirements, user journeys, and detailed workflows.
You will lead the creation of integrated experiences for all key stakeholders, including Underwriters (UWs), Underwriting Assistants (UAs), and other business users, ensuring seamless flow from submission through bind, issue, and post-bind processes. You will focus on deeply understanding business needs and translating them into actionable features, user stories, and process flows, including building product models and hierarchies, underwriting rules, rating algorithms, form inference / attachment conditions, and transactional activities - forming the backbone of our insurance platform development.
This is a strategic and hands-on business architecture role, directly shaping the vision, structure, and implementation of best-in-class commercial insurance products.
Core Responsibilities
Business Solutioning & Workflow Design
  • Design and own end-to-end functional workflows for new commercial insurance products, capturing all business activities (submission, pre-bind, bind, issue, post-bind, endorsements, renewals, etc.).
  • Collaborate with business, product, and operations teams to elicit business requirements, define user needs, and document user journeys and transactional flows.
  • Translate business requirements into clear, actionable features, user stories, acceptance criteria, and comprehensive business process documentation for development teams.

Stakeholder Engagement & Partnership
  • Serve as the principal business architect and liaison between product owners, business leaders, and technology teams to align business priorities, solution scope, and delivery.
  • Lead cross-functional workshops and requirement gathering sessions, fostering collaboration and consensus around solution design and workflow optimization.
  • Advocate for user-centered solutions that simplify, streamline, and enhance overall experience for internal business users, UWs, UAs, and related stakeholders.

Functional Solution Architecture
  • Develop business architecture artifacts-including process flows, workflow diagrams, wireframes (functional), and requirements templates-to guide solution development.
  • Specify requirements for integrated platform capabilities, such as rating components, form design and attachment, document management, and activity tracking-ensuring each stage of the product lifecycle is clearly defined and aligned to business needs.
  • Ensure that solutions are designed to be scalable, maintainable, and compliant with industry standards and internal policies.

SDLC Contribution & Functional Oversight
  • Provide domain expertise and functional guidance throughout all phases of the SDLC, engaging with business analysts, system analysts, product managers, and QA.
  • Validate and prioritize requirements for system enhancements, new product features, and workflow improvements.
  • Maintain governance over requirements quality, solution alignment, and business architecture best practices.

Continuous Improvement & Industry Awareness
  • Champion ongoing improvement in solutioning, documentation standards, and requirements management processes.
  • Stay informed about emerging trends, regulatory changes, and evolving best practices in commercial insurance and insurance platform solutions.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Business, Finance, Information Systems, or relevant discipline.
  • 12+ years of experience in insurance business analysis, solution architecture, or product development, with deep hands-on exposure to commercial P&C insurance products.
  • Significant experience with building and maintaining ISO / NCCI products including General Liability, Commercial Auto, Property and Workers Comp.
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing and documenting insurance workflows, business requirements, and functional solutions for policy administration platforms.
  • Proven ability to translate complex business needs into structured user stories, features, process flows, and solution artifacts consumable by delivery teams.
  • Strong leadership in cross-functional stakeholder management, consensus-building, and collaborative solution design.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills tailored to senior business and technical audiences.
  • Experience supporting new product launches or large-scale platform transformations within the insurance industry.
  • Familiarity with SDLC, Agile, and other project management methodologies as applied to requirements and business solutioning.
  • Knowledge of commercial insurance business processes (underwriting, rating, policy management, billing, compliance).
  • Experience with successfully delivery of end-to-end business workflows and functional solutions for commercial insurance product launches or platform enhancements.
  • Enhanced user and operational experience for internal insurance stakeholders, as measured by workflow efficiency, adoption, and business outcome.
  • Experience with establishing and maintaining industry-leading documentation and solutioning standards, serving as a model for future product initiatives.
