Grand Canyon Law Group is seeking an experienced Arizona criminal defense attorney to handle misdemeanor and lower-level felony cases throughout Maricopa and Pinal counties.

We are looking for someone who can walk into court prepared, manage a caseload with confidence, communicate clearly with clients, and take ownership without waiting for someone to assign every next step.

Depending on coverage needs, you may work from your own GCLG office and manage your daily responsibilities independently. That means you must be organized, accountable, proactive, and comfortable making sound decisions.

But independent does not mean unsupported.

You will have experienced paralegal support, weekly case staffing, access to the entire GCLG legal team, ongoing training, centralized intake and client-relations support, modern technology, AI-powered legal tools, and leadership that is invested in your development.

The Work You Will Handle

This attorney will primarily manage misdemeanor and lower-level felony matters, including cases involving:

• DUI
• Domestic violence
• Assault
• Disorderly conduct
• Criminal damage
• Shoplifting and theft
• Drug possession
• Weapons allegations
• Traffic-related criminal offenses
• Probation violations
• Lower-level felony offenses
• Other Arizona criminal matters appropriate to the attorney’s experience

As your skills, performance, and experience with GCLG grow, you may have opportunities to take on more serious felony cases, participate in complex case strategy, serve as second chair, and advance within the firm’s attorney-development framework.

What You Will Do

• Represent clients in misdemeanor and lower-level felony cases from initial appearance through trial, sentencing, or resolution
• Independently manage an active criminal caseload
• Evaluate evidence and identify legal and factual issues
• Develop case strategies based on the law, available evidence, client goals, and potential consequences
• Conduct legal research and draft motions, memoranda, and other pleadings
• Prepare for and conduct pretrial conferences, evidentiary hearings, settlement conferences, bench trials, jury trials, and sentencing proceedings
• Negotiate effectively and professionally with prosecutors
• Maintain credibility and positive working relationships with judges, prosecutors, court personnel, law enforcement agencies, experts, and opposing counsel
• Communicate clearly, honestly, and compassionately with clients and their families
• Explain legal options and potential outcomes in language clients can understand
• Establish realistic expectations and ensure clients know what will happen next
• Maintain complete and timely case notes, tasks, deadlines, and client communications in Clio
• Work closely with an assigned paralegal and provide clear case-specific direction
• Participate in weekly case-staffing meetings with attorneys and legal leadership
• Ask for input early when a case presents a new, unusual, or higher-risk issue
• Provide strategic input and courtroom coverage to other attorneys when appropriate
• Participate in ongoing legal education, training, and professional-development opportunities
• Represent GCLG professionally in the courtroom and the broader legal community

Self-Directed Does Not Mean Solo

You may spend much of your day managing your own calendar, caseload, and office. We need someone who can operate effectively without constant oversight.

The right attorney will:

• Review their calendar and priorities without waiting for reminders
• Prepare for court well in advance
• Keep cases moving instead of allowing tasks to stall

• Use their paralegal effectively and respectfully
• Follow up until assignments are fully completed

• Recognize when independent judgment is appropriate and when collaboration is necessary
• Follow established firm systems while offering thoughtful ideas for improvement
• Take responsibility for results rather than explaining why something was missed

You will have autonomy in your practice, but you will remain connected to and supported by a full legal team.

The Support Behind YouDedicated Paralegal Support

You will work with an experienced paralegal who assists with discovery, case organization, client communication, calendaring, document preparation, and case progression.

Weekly Case Staffing

Our attorneys meet regularly to discuss strategy, difficult issues, upcoming hearings, trial preparation, and case developments. You will have consistent access to experienced attorneys and legal leadership.

Full-Team Support

You will be supported by centralized teams handling intake, client relations, billing, marketing, technology, human resources, and firm operations.

Consistent Training

Training does not stop after onboarding. GCLG provides ongoing education regarding criminal law, courtroom advocacy, case strategy, client communication, firm systems, technology, and professional development.

CLE and Conference Opportunities

We invest in continuing legal education and provide opportunities for attorneys to attend relevant conferences, training programs, and professional events. Approved travel related to firm-sponsored education, conferences, and case responsibilities is supported by the firm.

Work Location and Schedule

This is not a fully remote position.

The attorney will work primarily from a GCLG office in Central Phoenix or Mesa, based on court coverage and firm needs. The role also requires regular in-person court appearances, client meetings, team collaboration, and travel throughout Maricopa and Pinal counties.

After successful onboarding, attorneys may have one designated work-from-home day each week, subject to court appearances, client needs, meetings, deadlines, and firm responsibilities.

Court and client obligations always take priority over the scheduled remote day.

Courts and Geographic Coverage

This position will primarily support matters in:

• Maricopa County Superior Court
• Pinal County Superior Court
• Phoenix Municipal Court
• Mesa Municipal Court
• Tempe Municipal Court
• Chandler Municipal Court
• Gilbert Municipal Court
• Scottsdale City Court
• Municipal and justice courts throughout Maricopa County
• Municipal and justice courts throughout Pinal County
• Other Arizona courts as reasonably required

Candidates must have reliable transportation and be comfortable maintaining an active court calendar across Phoenix, Mesa, the East Valley, and surrounding jurisdictions.

Required Qualifications

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
• Active member in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona
• Minimum of three years of criminal defense and/or criminal prosecution experience
• Experience handling Arizona misdemeanor cases
• Experience handling lower-level Arizona felony matters
• Meaningful courtroom experience
• Experience with motion practice, contested hearings, plea negotiations, and case resolution
• Ability to independently evaluate cases and develop legal strategy
• Strong written and oral advocacy skills
• Sound legal judgment
• Strong time-management, calendaring, and organizational skills
• Ability to manage a full caseload and competing deadlines
• Exceptional client communication skills
• Ability to work independently while remaining accountable to the broader team
• Ability to work effectively with an assigned paralegal
• Willingness to use Clio and GCLG’s established case-management systems consistently
• Comfort using modern technology and responsibly incorporating approved AI tools into legal work
• Reliable transportation and ability to appear in courts throughout Maricopa and Pinal counties

Preferred Qualifications

• Five or more years of Arizona criminal defense or prosecution experience
• Experience in both Maricopa and Pinal County courts
• Misdemeanor or felony jury trial experience
• Experience independently managing a high-volume criminal caseload
• Established relationships within Arizona’s criminal legal community
• Experience with Clio or another legal case-management platform
• Experience mentoring law clerks or junior attorneys
• Spanish fluency

Performance Expectations

We believe talented attorneys perform best when expectations are clear.

Attorneys in this position are expected to:

• Maintain at least 30 productive hours per week
• Achieve at least 1,440 productive hours annually, based on a 48-week year
• Maintain 100% compliance with court deadlines, client commitments, and Clio deadlines
• Complete at least 95% of assigned case-management tasks on time
• Maintain accurate and current case notes
• Communicate consistently with clients and document substantive communications
• Manage client expectations and move cases forward efficiently
• Secure at least 10 positive client reviews with a five-star rating annually
• Generate at least four retained cases annually through personal professional relationships, marketing, or referrals
• Participate or lead at least one legal education session annually
• Contribute to the onboarding or mentorship of law clerks when appropriate
