What is a Solidworks programmer?

A SolidWorks Programmer is a professional who specializes in using SolidWorks, a popular computer-aided design (CAD) software, to create, modify, and automate 3D models and engineering drawings. They often write macros or use the SolidWorks API to automate repetitive tasks, customize workflows, and integrate SolidWorks with other software systems. SolidWorks Programmers work closely with engineers and designers to streamline product development and improve design efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solidworks programmer?

To thrive as a Solidworks Programmer, you need strong proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, engineering design principles, and typically a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with Solidworks software, CAD/CAM integration, and sometimes certifications like Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP) are highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with design and manufacturing teams. These skills ensure accurate, innovative designs and efficient production workflows in engineering environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Solidworks programmers when collaborating with engineering and manufacturing teams?

Solidworks Programmers often encounter challenges in translating design intent into precise, manufacturable models, especially when collaborating with cross-functional teams. Differences in communication styles or technical terminology between engineers, designers, and machinists can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or errors in the final product. To overcome these challenges, Solidworks Programmers must be proactive in clarifying requirements, staying up-to-date with manufacturing capabilities, and using Solidworks’ collaboration tools to share and review models in real time. Cultivating strong teamwork and attention to detail helps ensure smooth workflow and high-quality outcomes.

What is the difference between Solidworks Programmer vs CAD Designer?

Why join Rotating Machinery Services?

Rotating Machinery Services (RMS) provides specialty machining, repair, maintenance and overhaul services for large, highly engineered turbomachinery. RMS is hiring an experienced CNC Programmer to support its full-time machining operations in Canastota, New York.

This is a hands-on programming position for someone who understands the entire machining process—not just creating toolpaths. You will review models and drawings, develop and improve CNC programs, select tooling and cutting parameters, support machine setups and help machinists troubleshoot programs on the shop floor.

The position also offers an opportunity to take on broader responsibility. Previous experience as a machining supervisor or lead is a plus, as you may help support facility operations when the Manager of Operations is unavailable.

⚙️ What you’ll be doing

  • Create CNC programs for 3-, 4- and 5-axis mills and lathes
  • Review 2D drawings, 3D models, blueprints and job requirements
  • Translate machining requirements into efficient Mastercam or SolidWorks CAM programs
  • Determine machining sequences, toolpaths, cutting tools, speeds and feeds
  • Perform programming calculations involving dimensions, geometry and material removal
  • Run simulations and tests to verify programs before production
  • Create geometric layouts using applicable CAD/CAM software
  • Develop new programs and modify existing programs to improve efficiency
  • Support machinists during CNC machine setup and initial prove-out
  • Troubleshoot program, tooling and machining issues
  • Improve setup times, tooling strategies and complex contouring processes
  • Monitor programs to ensure they follow blueprint and safety requirements
  • Validate completed programs and confirm they produce the intended results
  • Train employees on CNC programs and automated machining systems
  • Support facility operations when the Manager of Operations is unavailable
  • Follow all company safety procedures and shop requirements

⭐ Shop highlights

  • Programming for both CNC mills and lathes
  • 3-, 4- and 5-axis machining applications
  • Mastercam and SolidWorks CAM
  • Involvement from drawing review through machine setup
  • Opportunities to improve cycle times, tooling and setup efficiency
  • Direct collaboration with machinists on the shop floor

Required:

  • 4+ years of CNC programming experience
  • Experience programming 3-, 4- and 5-axis CNC mills and lathes
  • Working experience with Mastercam and SolidWorks CAM
  • Ability to review and interpret 2D drawings, 3D models and blueprints
  • Knowledge of CNC machining, cutting tools, speeds, feeds and setup requirements
  • Strong algebra, geometry and trigonometry skills
  • Understanding of machine tools and metalworking processes
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with limited supervision
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Authorization to work in the United States
  • Ability to read, write, understand and speak English proficiently

  • Experience operating or programming CMMs
  • Familiarity with Fanuc, Siemens and Okuma controls
  • Technical-school certification or equivalent machining experience
  • Experience training machinists or CNC operators

Why you’ll like working here

This role gives you ownership beyond sitting at a computer and generating toolpaths. You will work directly with machinists, support setups, solve machining problems and identify ways to reduce setup time and improve productivity.

For someone with leadership experience—or an interest in taking on more responsibility—the position may also provide opportunities to support broader facility operations when needed.
