Job description

Job Overview

Performs duties operating a large semi-tractor trailer or roll-off truck and other motorized equipment and vehicles used in the transport of bulk solid waste material.

Salary 

$43,680 - $52,748

Ideal Candidate

The Hillsborough County Solid Waste Department is seeking a Solid Waste Transfer Equipment Operator to operate semi-tractor trailers, roll-off trucks and other motorized equipment and vehicles.  The ideal candidate will have advanced experience in semi-tractor trailer operation.  Preferably, candidate will possess knowledge of solid waste operations.  Candidate must have the ability to be exposed to loud sounds in a waste transfer station, handle inordinate smells from trash and exposure to dirt-filled grounds.  Candidate will also perform manual labor in outside environment, exposed to heat, sun, high humidity, rain and other adverse weather conditions.  Candidate will walk/stand for prolonged periods of time (approximately six (6) hours) per day. The job also requires frequent fine manipulations, repetitive motion, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 30 pounds, and occasional bending, crawling, climbing and stooping.  Candidate must possess a Class A Commercial driver's license and have the ability to pass a DOT/CDL physical examination annually.

Duties and Responsibilities

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below:

  • Operates large semi-tractor trailer or roll-off motorized vehicles for the transportation of bulk solid waste material in constricted loading/unloading locations, on unimproved roads, and on heavily traveled roads and highways in compliance with all DOT and County safety rules and regulations. 
  • Operates other heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, excavators, and skid steers to perform a variety of solid waste operational functions, including receiving waste, loading trailers, processing roll-off containers, and performing clean-up functions.
  • Operates hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical auxiliary equipment related to assigned tractors and trailers.
  • Checks and ensures that equipment is serviced and in good working condition; makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and ensures that periodic maintenance and major repairs are performed.
  • Performs daily safety inspections and observes proper safety practices and regulations when operating or working around equipment.
  • May supervise subordinate operators, trades helpers, or laborers or act as a lead driver.
  • Uses manual tools to pick up litter at the facility and ensure proper disposal.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Job Specifications

  • Knowledge of the operation of semi-tractor trailer transport, including medium to heavy motorized construction equipment and transportation vehicles, including front-end loaders or excavators, and other motorized equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations applicable to the operation of motorized construction, maintenance, and transport equipment on public streets and highways.
  • Knowledge of safety equipment, standards and regulations.
  • Skill in the operation of a semi-tractor trailer transport and other motorized equipment.
  • Ability to service and make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, including medium to heavy motorized construction equipment and transportation vehicles.
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally.
  • Ability to demonstrate good customer service skills.
  • Ability to read and understand work related material.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to pass DOT physical on an annual basis.

Physical Requirements

  • Required to work in outside in all types of weather.
  • Required to lift up to 50 lbs. and push/pull up to 100 pounds.  

Work Category

  • Heavy Work- Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; AND
  • Three years of experience in the operation of a semi-tractor trailer transport and/or medium and heavy construction equipment, including front-end loaders or excavators; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above; AND
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A.

Emergency Management Responsibilities

In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee's department, the County's Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.
