In this position...
This position involves battery modeling research to support the development of current and future hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric vehicles within Ford Research and Advanced Engineering. The mission is to perform research to develop new battery-related features, enhance existing features, and enable lower cost, more reliable, and longer-lived batteries.
Responsibilities
What You'll do
  • Develop advanced battery plant models for use in battery design and vehicle system simulations
  • Identify and prescribe test methods, including novel measurements beyond traditional battery cycling, that can deliver data needed to calibrate or validate multi-physics battery models
  • Post-process battery cell and pack test data to evaluate performance or life characteristics
  • Define and lead research projects related to battery management & modeling
  • Implement multi-physics battery models using various modeling tools
  • Map battery hardware architectures and interfaces between battery cells and the battery controller to simulation environments, while balancing complexity with execution speed
  • Create reduced order models from highly complex physical plant models for battery management system implementation
  • Transfer developed technologies to product teams

Qualifications
You'll Have
  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related degree
  • 5+ years of experience with battery applications of physics-based modeling, including heat/mass transport, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, or chemical/mechanical degradation processes, or electrochemistry applications (Thesis and/or Dissertation allowed)
  • Demonstrated experience developing computational strategies for solving large systems of coupled ordinary differential equations or partial differential equations

Even Better, you may have...
  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related degree
  • 8+ years of experience with electrochemical battery modeling (Thesis and/or Dissertation allowed)
  • Strong knowledge in one and good awareness of the other of the following competencies
    • Batteries and battery systems, especially of the type used in vehicle Electrification
    • Control Systems, especially state estimation theory
