What Are Jobs in the Solar Industry?

Jobs in the solar industry are primarily in installation and sales. Installation involves the physical process of installing the solar panels, typically on a roof, and integrating the assembly into the electricity grid or the building. As one might expect, sales positions are generally found within solar technology companies and are responsible for aiding customers in determining the right solar solution for their needs. Solar engineers may operate in a number of different sectors, including materials, chemical, industrial, computer software, and more. Engineers help determine how to create solar panels more efficiently or how to better convert the sun’s energy into electricity.

What are solar jobs?

Solar jobs are roles involved in the design, installation, maintenance, and management of solar energy systems, including solar panels and related infrastructure. These jobs can range from solar panel installers and electricians to engineers, project managers, sales representatives, and researchers. Solar jobs play a crucial role in the transition to renewable energy by helping homes, businesses, and communities adopt clean, sustainable power sources.

How to get a job in the solar field?

To get a job in the solar field, candidates should develop relevant skills such as electrical or construction experience, obtain certifications like NABCEP, and gain hands-on experience through apprenticeships or entry-level positions. Networking within the industry and staying informed about renewable energy trends can also improve job prospects.

Is working in solar a good career?

Working in solar is a growing field with increasing demand for installers, technicians, and engineers. It offers opportunities for hands-on work, technical skill development, and often requires certifications such as NABCEP. The industry is expected to expand as renewable energy adoption increases globally.

What job makes $1,000,000 a year?

In the solar industry, high-level executive roles such as CEO or founder of a successful solar company can earn over $1,000,000 annually through salary, bonuses, and profit sharing. These positions typically require extensive experience, leadership skills, and a strong business background. Most solar jobs, including installation and sales, do not reach this income level.

What are some common challenges faced in a solar installer role, and how can they be managed?

Solar installers often encounter challenges such as working in varying weather conditions, navigating complex rooftops, and managing tight project schedules. To manage these, installers typically receive safety training, use specialized equipment, and work closely with project managers to ensure timelines are met. Team communication and adaptability are key, as installers often collaborate with electricians and engineers to address on-site issues efficiently. Emphasizing safety and staying up-to-date with industry best practices can help overcome these challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solar Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Technician, you need a solid understanding of electrical systems, solar panel installation, and safety protocols, often supported by technical training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with photovoltaic (PV) system design software, electrical testing equipment, and industry-standard safety gear is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help technicians excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with clients or team members. These skills ensure safe, efficient installation and maintenance of solar systems, contributing to reliable renewable energy solutions.

What is the difference between Solar and Solar Installer?

AspectSolarSolar Installer

Work EnvironmentDesign, planning, and overseeing solar projectsHands-on installation and maintenance of solar panels
Industry UsageDesigners, engineers, project managersTechnicians, installers, field workers
Common Search/ComparisonMore strategic, design-focused rolesInstallation and technical roles

While both Solar and Solar Installer roles involve working with solar energy, Solar typically refers to design, engineering, or project management positions, whereas Solar Installer focuses on the hands-on installation and maintenance of solar panels. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find roles aligned with their skills and certifications in the solar industry.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

In the solar industry, roles such as experienced solar sales representatives or project managers can earn $10,000 or more per month through commissions, bonuses, and high sales volume. Success in these roles typically requires strong sales skills, industry knowledge, and certifications rather than a formal degree.

Job description

SET Development is supporting a confidential, venture-backed aerospace company developing first-of-kind space-based solar power systems — designed to deliver continuous baseload energy from orbit to ground, 24/7, across entire continents, without batteries or seasonal constraints. This is an IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE POSITION!
This is an early-stage, high-impact engineering environment. You will own real decisions, work across disciplines, and contribute directly to hardware that will fly.
─────────────────────────────────────────────
THE ROLE
We are seeking a Spacecraft Solar Array Engineer to lead the design, development, qualification, and in-orbit performance optimization of spacecraft photovoltaic systems — from initial concept through end-of-life.
─────────────────────────────────────────────
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Solar Array Design & Architecture
- Design spacecraft solar array systems including cell technology selection (multi-junction), string configuration, panel layout, and system interfaces
- Develop power budgets and orbital energy balance models across eclipse cycles, pointing constraints, and end-of-life degradation scenarios
- Produce interface control documents (ICDs), design specifications, and technical documentation
Analysis & Modeling
- Perform electrical, thermal, and structural analyses of solar array assemblies
- Model radiation effects, thermal cycling, and long-term degradation
- Evaluate system-level performance impacts across mission scenarios
Hardware Development & Integration
- Support development of deployable solar array systems including structural interfaces and articulation mechanisms
- Contribute to rapid prototyping, hardware integration, and validation
- Collaborate with structures, avionics, manufacturing, and supply chain teams
Test & Qualification
- Define and execute qualification and acceptance test campaigns: TVAC, vibration, shock, electrical performance, and lifecycle testing
- Analyze test results, respond to anomalies, and drive design improvements
─────────────────────────────────────────────
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Aerospace, or Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
- 5+ years of experience in spacecraft solar arrays, spacecraft power systems, or space-rated photovoltaic hardware
- Demonstrated experience in at least one of: solar array design/sizing, power system modeling, or space hardware qualification and testing
