What is a solar subcontractor?

Solar subcontractors are specialized companies or individuals hired by a primary contractor to perform specific tasks related to solar panel installation projects. Their responsibilities may include electrical work, mounting solar panels, system wiring, site assessments, or maintenance. They bring expertise in particular areas that help ensure the solar installation meets industry standards and local regulations. Working as a solar subcontractor often involves collaborating closely with general contractors, project managers, and inspection authorities to deliver successful solar energy systems. This role is essential for scaling solar projects efficiently and with high-quality workmanship.

What are some common challenges faced by solar subcontractors when coordinating with general contractors and project managers?

Solar subcontractors often encounter challenges related to communication and scheduling coordination with general contractors and project managers. Delays in material delivery, last-minute design changes, and unclear project timelines can impact workflow and productivity. To minimize these issues, successful subcontractors prioritize clear communication, maintain flexible schedules, and proactively address potential conflicts during project planning meetings. Building strong professional relationships with other stakeholders also helps ensure smoother project execution and timely completion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar subcontractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Subcontractor, you need expertise in electrical and construction work, a relevant trade license, and knowledge of solar energy systems. Familiarity with tools such as solar panel installation equipment, electrical testing devices, and compliance with safety standards is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication enable efficient teamwork and client satisfaction. These abilities are crucial to ensure safe, high-quality solar installations that meet industry regulations and customer expectations.

Help Lead the Next Chapter of One of the Region's Most Respected Solar Companies
For more than 20 years, Exact Solar has built a reputation as one of the Mid-Atlantic region's most trusted solar companies through technical excellence, exceptional customer service, and a genuine commitment to our employees.
As our business continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced Commercial Project Delivery Manager to join our operations team and help support the successful execution of an expanding portfolio of commercial solar projects.
This is not a traditional project management role. We're looking for someone who enjoys making an entire organization stronger. Someone who naturally asks:
"How can I help this team succeed?"
If you're energized by leading commercial solar projects, supporting field teams, improving operational coordination, developing people, and helping a growing company scale successfully, we'd love to meet you.
About the Role
As Exact Solar has grown, so has the complexity and volume of the projects we deliver. We already have an experienced operations team, including our Master Electrician who oversees our commercial field operations and has been instrumental in building our reputation for quality.
However, we are hoping to find a seasoned project or construction management professional to increase our operational capacity and provide the additional bandwidth needed to support a growing organization. This is a local, in-office, in-person role in Newtown, PA. Remote candidates will not be considered.
Working directly alongside our Operations Leadership Team and ownership, you will help coordinate commercial project delivery from engineering through commissioning while supporting hiring, workforce planning, scheduling, procurement, engineering coordination, customer communication, and field execution. Together, you'll help ensure our operations continue to scale without compromising the quality, craftsmanship, customer experience, or team culture that define Exact Solar.
Your Primary Responsibilities
Working in partnership with our Operations Leader, you will help coordinate all aspects of commercial project delivery and operational execution.
Commercial Project Delivery
  • Lead commercial solar projects from contract turnover through final commissioning.
  • Coordinate engineering, permitting, procurement, scheduling, construction, inspections, commissioning, and project closeout.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, milestones, and action plans.
  • Proactively identify and resolve project challenges before they impact schedule, quality, or customer satisfaction.
  • Manage customer communications throughout project execution.
  • Coordinate with utility companies, inspectors, AHJs, engineering partners, and subcontractors.
  • Support project financial performance through effective planning and execution.

Field Leadership & Coordination
  • Spend regular time in the field supporting superintendents, foremen, electricians, subcontractors, inspectors, and customers.
  • Help remove obstacles so field teams can remain productive and focused on quality workmanship.
  • Coordinate field activities, site logistics, equipment deliveries, and project milestones.
  • Support safety, quality assurance, and commissioning activities.
  • Assist with workforce planning and crew utilization.

Operations Support
As a key member of our operations leadership team, you'll help provide additional management bandwidth in areas including:
  • Workforce planning and hiring
  • Recruiting and onboarding new team members
  • Scheduling crews and subcontractors
  • Procurement and long-lead equipment planning
  • Engineering and design coordination
  • Utility interconnection and inspection coordination
  • Inventory planning and forecasting
  • Resource planning and workload forecasting
  • Continuous improvement initiatives
  • Process development and operational coordination

This role is highly collaborative. Rather than operating independently, you'll work alongside existing leadership to improve communication, coordination, and execution across the organization.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum five years of commercial solar project management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing commercial photovoltaic projects from contract award through commissioning.
  • Experience managing field personnel, construction superintendents, foremen, subcontractors, and installation crews on active job sites.
  • Strong understanding of commercial solar construction, electrical systems, scheduling, procurement, safety, inspections, and commissioning.
  • Experience coordinating engineering, permitting, utility interconnection, and AHJ inspections.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel and project management software.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel regularly to project sites throughout our service territory.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related field.
  • NABCEP certification or other renewable energy credentials.
  • Experience with commercial battery storage projects.
  • Experience with ERP, scheduling, or project management platforms.

Who We're Looking For
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys collaborating with experienced professionals rather than working independently in a silo.
The strongest candidates will be comfortable moving between the office and the field, helping solve problems wherever they're needed-whether that's reviewing engineering progress, walking a jobsite with a foreman, coordinating equipment deliveries, assisting with hiring, or helping ownership think several months ahead.
More than anything, we're looking for a servant leadership personality. Someone who:
  • Builds trust before making changes.
  • Leads through collaboration rather than authority.
  • Enjoys helping others become more successful.
  • Listens first and acts thoughtfully.
  • Earns respect through competence, humility, and consistency.
  • Values teamwork over ego.

Compensation: $85,000.00 - $105,000.00 per month
