What is a solar project?

Solar projects refer to initiatives that involve the design, development, installation, and management of solar energy systems. These projects can range from small residential rooftop solar panels to large-scale solar farms that generate electricity for thousands of homes. Solar projects aim to harness energy from the sun using photovoltaic cells or solar thermal systems, providing a clean, renewable alternative to fossil fuels. They often require collaboration among engineers, project managers, electricians, and environmental specialists. The growing focus on sustainability and clean energy has made solar projects increasingly popular worldwide.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a solar project manager?

A Solar Project Manager is responsible for overseeing the planning, execution, and completion of solar installation projects. Their daily tasks often include coordinating with engineers, contractors, and clients, monitoring project timelines and budgets, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and resolving any issues that arise on-site. They also handle documentation, procurement of materials, and communicate progress to stakeholders. The role requires strong organizational skills and frequent collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Project Manager, you need expertise in project management, renewable energy systems, and a relevant engineering or technical degree. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), permitting processes, and industry certifications like PMP or NABCEP are typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help manage teams and stakeholder expectations. These skills are vital for delivering solar projects on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

What is the difference between Solar Project vs Solar Installer?

Search & Comparison IntentProject planning, management rolesHands-on installation roles

Solar Project roles focus on planning, managing, and overseeing solar energy projects, often requiring project management skills and certifications. Solar Installers are responsible for physically installing solar panels and systems on-site, requiring technical installation certifications. While both roles are essential in the solar industry, Solar Projects involve more coordination and management, whereas Solar Installers focus on the hands-on installation process.

Is working in a solar project a good career?

Working in a solar project involves roles such as installation, maintenance, and design, which are in demand due to the growth of renewable energy. It often requires technical skills, safety training, and certifications like NABCEP, and offers opportunities in both fieldwork and project management. The industry provides a stable career with potential for advancement as solar energy adoption increases.

Do you enjoy leading projects, helping customers, solving complex problems, making a meaningful impact accelerating the energy transition away from fossil fuels, all while experiencing the satisfaction of delivering impactful projects from start to finish?

DNV Energy Systems is hiring a Project Manager Solar Independent Engineering (Distributed Generation, Residential & Storage) within our team. In this role, you will work on a variety of distributed generation, community solar, commercial & industrial (C&I), residential solar and solar + storage projects throughout North America. You will be exposed to the entire project life cycle, working with the biggest developers and financiers in the space with cutting edge technology.

In this role, our team provides technical consulting and independent engineering services for solar project developers, financial institutions, and investors who rely on our reports as part of their investment decision making process.

Why Join Our Team

We believe the best solutions come from people who are curious, willing to learn, eager to share knowledge, and passionate about helping customers succeed. You'll work alongside industry experts who challenge each other to grow, innovate, and continuously improve how we serve the renewable energy industry.

We value individuals who bring not only strong technical and project management skills, but also a growth mindset, a customer-first attitude, and a genuine desire to contribute to a high-performing and inclusive team.

We are looking for individuals who embody DNV's values and are excited to contribute to a culture built on customer trust, teamwork, continuous improvement, digital curiosity, and the shared mission of accelerating the energy transition.

This role can be based out of a DNV office in the following markets: Oakland (CA), San Diego (CA), Austin (TX), Houston (TX), Portland (OR), Seattle (WA), New York City (NY), Medford (MA), or Dallas (TX), presenting a dynamic hybrid schedule where employees will at least spend three (3) days per week working from either a DNV office or client location/site. Further details regarding role-specific requirements will be shared during the interview process.

The position may also be considered at other DNV offices within the US.
