What does a solar project engineer do?

A solar project engineer develops equipment that converts sunlight into usable electricity. As a solar project engineer, you collaborate with other engineers and designers on the development of photovoltaic (PV) technologies, such as solar panel arrays and solar power plants. Your responsibilities include modeling PV systems and designing solar energy materials to meet project specifications, solving solar engineering problems, and installing the solutions your team develops to promote the use of solar energy over non-renewable energy resources.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar project engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Project Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical or mechanical engineering, with a relevant degree and experience in solar energy systems. Familiarity with solar design software (such as PVsyst or AutoCAD), project management tools, and relevant certifications like NABCEP are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills set top candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring efficient project execution, regulatory compliance, and successful collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by solar project engineers during the installation phase, and how are they typically addressed?

Solar Project Engineers often encounter challenges such as unexpected site conditions, permitting delays, and coordinating with multiple contractors during the installation phase. These challenges are typically addressed by conducting thorough site assessments beforehand, maintaining clear communication with stakeholders, and implementing effective project management practices. Flexibility and proactive problem-solving are essential, as is the ability to adapt schedules and resources to keep the project on track. Regular meetings with construction teams and other engineers help ensure swift resolution of on-site issues.

Do you enjoy leading projects, helping customers, solving complex problems, making a meaningful impact accelerating the energy transition away from fossil fuels, all while experiencing the satisfaction of delivering impactful projects from start to finish?

DNV Energy Systems is hiring a Project Manager Solar Independent Engineering (Distributed Generation, Residential & Storage) within our team. In this role, you will work on a variety of distributed generation, community solar, commercial & industrial (C&I), residential solar and solar + storage projects throughout North America. You will be exposed to the entire project life cycle, working with the biggest developers and financiers in the space with cutting edge technology.

The primary functions of this role include supporting major customer accounts, performing project due diligence, managing projects, contributing to process improvements, sharing knowledge, obtaining and receiving feedback, and a bit of business development including developing proposals.

By joining our team, you will be part of accelerating the widespread deployment of solar energy, energy storage systems, and positively impacting society and the planet. We achieve our purpose through the long-term success of our customers. We strive to be a high-performing, innovative team that reflects the equity, respect, and diversity we wish to see in the world.  We care about providing our employees with fulfilling long-term experience. Why Join Our Team

Our team combines technical rigor with a collaborative and supportive culture. We believe the best solutions come from people who are curious, willing to learn, eager to share knowledge, and passionate about helping customers succeed. You'll work alongside industry experts who challenge each other to grow, innovate, and continuously improve how we serve the renewable energy industry.

We value individuals who bring not only strong technical and project management skills, but also a growth mindset, a customer-first attitude, and a genuine desire to contribute to a high-performing and inclusive team.

We are looking for individuals who embody DNV's values and are excited to contribute to a culture built on customer trust, teamwork, continuous improvement, digital curiosity, and the shared mission of accelerating the energy transition.

Further details regarding role-specific requirements will be shared during the interview process.

The position may also be considered at other DNV offices within the US.
