What Does a Solar Project Manager Do?

A solar project manager oversees the installation of solar projects, from small residential and commercial roofing projects to large-scale solar power plants. Your duties and responsibilities in this career can vary slightly depending on the scale of your project plan, but many of the principles are overlapping. You need to know how to develop budgets, manage proposals and bids from contractors, negotiate prices, pull building permits, coordinate the construction schedule, and be familiar with tax incentives and rebates for which your clients may qualify.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solar Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, knowledge of renewable energy systems, and typically a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), CAD tools, and relevant certifications like PMP or NABCEP is often required. Outstanding communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help manage teams, stakeholders, and complex project timelines. These skills ensure solar projects are completed efficiently, safely, and within budget, maximizing both sustainability and client satisfaction.

Job description

Job Description:
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead the deployment of NEXTPower's intelligent software solutions - TrueCapture and Navigator - across a multi-gigawatt portfolio of utility-scale solar projects.
This role owns end-to-end execution from contract signature through go-live, ensuring on-time deployment, revenue realization, and exceptional customer satisfaction. You will serve as the central coordination point across Engineering, Network, Supply Chain, Software, Product, Commissioning teams, EPCs, and asset owners.
This position is ideal for a structured, proactive project leader who thrives in cross-functional environments and is passionate about renewable energy innovation.
What You'll Do
End-to-End Project Execution
  • Drive full lifecycle deployment of TrueCapture and Navigator systems from contract execution through commissioning and go-live.
  • Develop and manage detailed project schedules, ensuring alignment across internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate closely with Project Services and Commissioning teams to prepare for upcoming deployments.
  • Collaborate with customers (Owners, EPCs, O&M teams) and NX vendors to schedule and execute site-specific data collection and installation activities.

Field & Technical Coordination
  • Work directly with field personnel to support commissioning activities and troubleshoot deployment challenges.
  • Coordinate third-party vendors and customers for installation and commissioning of NX equipment onsite.
  • Ensure seamless handoff of controls, data systems, and operational responsibilities during and after deployment.

Financial & Performance Management
  • Own project P&L, including revenue forecasting, invoicing, cash flow tracking, and cost management.
  • Establish, measure, and report KPIs to ensure program-level transparency and execution discipline.
  • Maintain rigorous documentation practices and due diligence to ensure accuracy in reporting and forecasting.

Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Act as the primary liaison across Network Engineering, Project Engineering, Supply Chain, Software, Product, and Commissioning teams to remove blockers and maintain schedule integrity.
  • Support Sales, Engineering, and Marketing teams as needed for customer engagement and strategic initiatives.
  • Serve as the internal voice of the customer, ensuring customer expectations and commitments are met.

What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (Engineering or related technical field preferred).
  • 5-8 years of experience as a Project Manager, managing multiple concurrent projects in parallel environments.
  • Proven experience driving cross-functional technical deployments from planning through commissioning.
  • Hands-on experience with project management tools such as Gantt charts, JIRA, and KPI dashboards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including structured documentation, meeting minutes, and proactive follow-up with action owners through closure.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Passion for solar or renewable energy.
  • Strong knowledge of photovoltaic (PV) systems and their applications.
  • Experience with photovoltaic tracking systems or utility-scale solar projects.
  • PMP certification is a plus.
Additional Information
  • Job Type: Full-Time
  • Travel: Up to 10%
  • Location: Open to remote candidates (U.S.-based)
