What is a solar process engineer?

Solar Process Engineers are professionals who design, optimize, and oversee the manufacturing processes involved in producing solar panels and related components. They work to improve efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness in solar energy production, often collaborating with research and development, quality assurance, and manufacturing teams. Their responsibilities may include developing new fabrication techniques, troubleshooting production issues, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Solar Process Engineers play a crucial role in advancing renewable energy technologies and making solar power more accessible and affordable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar process engineer?

To thrive as a Solar Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, electrical, or mechanical engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing or process optimization. Familiarity with process simulation software, statistical process control (SPC) tools, and certifications like Six Sigma are typically used in this role. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help individuals excel in cross-functional teams and problem-solving situations. These competencies ensure efficient production processes, high-quality solar products, and continual innovation in the rapidly evolving renewable energy industry.

What are some typical challenges solar process engineers face when optimizing manufacturing processes for solar panels?

Solar Process Engineers frequently encounter challenges such as maintaining high product yield while minimizing manufacturing costs, integrating new technologies without disrupting production, and ensuring strict quality standards are met. They must also troubleshoot equipment issues and collaborate closely with R&D, quality assurance, and production teams to implement process improvements. A proactive approach and strong problem-solving skills are essential for adapting to rapidly evolving technologies and industry standards in solar manufacturing.

What is the difference between Solar Process Engineer vs Solar Design Engineer?

If you're passionate about renewable energy and want to "Make the Difference" by building a lasting positive impact on the planet and communities everywhere, join us at CS Power Systems-where your talent can help shape the clean energy revolution.
This position is responsible for leading and delivering SAP PP (Production Planning) and QM (Quality Management) solutions in a manufacturing environment. The Senior SAP PP/QM Consultant will act as the key liaison between business users, plant operations, and Group IT, ensuring that SAP PP/QM processes are designed, implemented, stabilized, and continuously improved to support 24x7 manufacturing operations.
The role requires strong hands-on configuration experience in SAP PP and QM, deep understanding of discrete manufacturing processes, and proven experience supporting production, quality, and engineering teams in a factory environment. The consultant will also play a key role in system cutovers, plant go-lives, enhancements, and ongoing operational support.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead SAP PP and QM functional design, configuration, testing, and deployment for manufacturing plants, including new implementations, carve-outs, and rollouts.
  • Serve as the primary functional owner for SAP PP and QM modules, covering end-to-end processes such as:
  • Production planning and execution (MPS, MRP, production orders, confirmations, backflushing)
  • BOMs, routings, work centers, and capacity planning
  • Quality inspection processes (incoming, in-process, and final inspection)
  • Inspection plans, inspection characteristics, usage decisions, quality notifications, and defects management
  • Work closely with production, quality, engineering, and supply chain teams to understand business requirements, identify process gaps, and translate them into SAP solutions.
  • Support integration points between PP/QM and other modules and systems, including MM, WM/EWM, SD, FI/CO, MES, WMS, and external quality or shop-floor systems.
  • Prepare and maintain functional specifications, configuration documentation, SOPs, and training materials for PP and QM processes.
  • Lead and execute system testing activities, including unit testing, SIT, and UAT; support cutover planning and execution for plant go-lives.
  • Provide day-to-day production support, issue troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis for PP/QM-related issues in a live manufacturing environment.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by optimizing system processes, improving data accuracy, and enhancing reporting and visibility for production and quality KPIs.
  • Coordinate with ABAP, basis, and integration teams to support enhancements, interfaces, reports, forms, and workflow developments.
  • Ensure alignment with global SAP templates and governance standards while addressing local plant operational requirements.
  • Assist in training end users, super users, and key users; provide on-site and remote support as needed.
  • Support audit, compliance, and regulatory requirements related to quality and manufacturing processes.
  • Participate in ERP roadmap planning, system upgrades, and digital factory initiatives.

Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Engineering, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, or a related field; Master's degree is a plus.
  • 8+ years of hands-on SAP functional experience, with at least 5+ years focused on SAP PP and QM in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of discrete manufacturing processes; experience in high-volume, capital-intensive industries (e.g., solar, electronics, automotive, or semiconductor) is highly preferred.
  • Proven experience in full-cycle SAP implementations, rollouts, or carve-outs, including blueprint, realization, testing, go-live, and hypercare.
  • Solid knowledge of SAP PP and QM configuration, master data setup, and integration with MM, WM/EWM, and MES systems.
  • Experience supporting 24x7 production environments and working under tight timelines.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both business and technical stakeholders.
  • Fluent in English; Chinese (Mandarin) proficiency is strongly preferred and considered a major advantage.
  • Willingness to be based at or frequently visit manufacturing sites; occasional travel across North America may be required.

Compensation and Benefits:
