Job description

The Senior Engineer in Transmission System Planning provides transmission-focused subject matter expertise in power system studies and project development by carrying out assignments associated with the modeling and development of the transmission system.

The role requires extensive experience associated with modeling, analyses, and planning level designs of transmission lines and substation facilities in an electric power system. Typical reliability studies include analyses of power flow, transient stability, short circuit, and electromagnetic transients. This position also represents the company on regional and national transmission committees regarding transmission planning matters for NEPOOL, NERC, NPCC, and ISOโ€‘NE.

Responsibilities

  • Independently develop and maintain the system models for transmission studies including collection, review or modification of a variety of electric system parameters: equipment ratings, impedances, contingency sets, protection and control parameters, as well as system topology
  • Conducts adequacy assessments and develops options to meet delivery objectives with latitude for independent action and decision making. Identifies key technical issues and develops solutions
  • Responsible for understanding, interpreting and applying industry and corporate transmission planning standards and the regulations of Federal, State and Local authorities
  • Represents the department and the company on various industry related committees
  • Participates with other utilities and ISO NE planning staff in the preparation of regional transmission expansion studies
  • Employs teamwork with engineers in System Planning, Transmission Asset Strategy, and engineers and operating personnel elsewhere in Electric Operations in performing analyses and providing technical support in planning and operations
  • Plans, develops and collaborates with others to implement and manage the transmission assets life cycle plan
  • Communicates clearly and effectively verbally and in writing the results of analyses and action plan.
  • Trains junior staff in technical analyses and procedures

Qualifications

  • BSEE, Power Systems, required, an advanced degree, MSEE or MBA preferred
  • Professional Engineerโ€™s License (PE) preferred
  • 5+ years of electric utility power systems experience, including transmission system planning, engineering or operations
  • Proficiency in Power System Analytics: PSSE, TARA, ASPEN, PSCAD or similar, and programing languages e.g. Python
  • Knowledge of new technologies including photovoltaic solar, electric vehicles, and battery storage (PV, EV, BESS)
  • Knowledge of National, State and other planning standards and reliability criteria
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to develop strategic partnerships
  • Ability to achieve desired results by setting high standards for self and others and accepts responsibility for outcomes
  • Skilled in working cross functionally
